Many undergraduate students wonder what it is like to be part of the Sigma Pi Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta. Here is what the average timeline and experience looks like for students enrolled in our undergraduate programs.
Typically students join in their junior or senior year, but we start our timeline earlier to help our first and second year students set their sights high if they have a goal of joining the chapter.
Students who join Lambda Pi Eta must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and 60 semester credit hours. They must also have a 3.25 GPA in their in-discipline major/minor with at least 12 credit hours completed in their program.
Students at SUNY Oswego often take 15 credit hours a semester, meaning most students spend their first year or two at SUNY Oswego. If you are a transfer student, your work at your prior college have helped you earn your overall credit hours and in-discipline coursework.
If you have not yet surpassed these benchmarks, we invite you to follow our social media channels and focus on your academic achievement in the classroom so you will be eligible to join when the time is right!
Typically, our fall semester includes a kick-off meeting. Student executive board officers then work to offer additional programming of interest to student members. If we did not secure a full slate of officers, we will continue to fill board positions in the first few weeks of class. Attendance is not mandatory - you are not kicked out if you don't attend anything.
Members should be focused on their classroom performance. If they desire, they can volunteer, attend events, suggest and plan programming with chapter executive board members.
The chapter faculty advisor represents the Sigma Pi chapter at the annual chapter meeting in November. This meeting is held during the National Communication Association's annual convention. Updates are provided to the officers and chapter members as information is relevant to our chapter.
If you are not yet a member and plan to join, we welcome you to attend some of our programming. Note that some events may not be open to all members of the public.
A semester kick-off meeting is sometimesheld when students return to campus. Other than that, Fall and Spring look very similar for inducted members - they focus on their achievements in the classroom, volunteer as they find the time to do so, and focus on their next goals in life.
The only difference is for prospective members: Spring is when invitations go out to join the honor society.
In April, we hold an important ritual and ceremony to fully induct our new members into the Sigma Pi Chapter. This ceremony is where newly inducted members receive their certificate, pin, and cords and affirm their commitment to the organization through an oath and induction ritual. Members who joined in Fall and Spring are both recognized at this ceremony.
We hold this Spring Ceremony on or near QUEST, our campus day to honor and recognize student research and scholarly activity.
This ceremony isn't just for new members: As part of this ceremony, we also honor and recognize our graduating seniors who will receive their cords. We also recognize members for their service to the community and to the organization.
We also solicit a slate of officers for the next year, but if seats are unfilled we may not fill our eboard until the fall semester.
