Dr. Maynard is a surgeon coming from Oxford University Hospital to share his experiences working in Gaza. He will giving a keynote speech on the war on healthcare in Gaza following the Q&A from 6:30 – 8 PM. The keynote speech will be held in the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Please note – the Q&A and Keynote Speech are in different locations. This event is not affiliated with the Ohio State University nor were any OSU resources used for the hosting of this event.

Every year, the Office of Global Health hosts Thai Exchange Students to come to OSU in order to share their medical experiences and allow us to share ours. LIGHT will be hosting an event with these students to get to know one another’s cultures and different styles of medical training.
Noureen Bhuiya, an M3 here at OSUCOM, will be giving the second talk in our Refugee and Immigrant Healthcare Mini-Series with a presentation focused on community refugee and immigrant services!

Dr. Rosalia Mahr will be leading a DIY cardiopulmonary trainer workshop focused on treating cardiopulmonary emergencies in low-resource settings. Dr. Mahr is Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and has done amazing work in Uganda, Malawi, and Honduras teaching emergency medicine and point-of-care ultrasound. During the workshop, she plans to replicate a lung effusion, pulmonary edema, a pneumothorax, and teach CURLS (Cardiac Ultrasound in a Resource Limited Setting).
This event will be limited to 30 people so please RSVP if you plan to come.
There will also be Host Defense pins for all our wonderful M2’s as you finish up Part 1!

Dr. Amina Smajlovic, a pediatrician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, will be giving a talk on her New to U.S. clinic. She will be sharing her experiences working with refugee and immigrant populations in the New to U.S. clinic, as well as providing advice on how we, as medical students, can be advocates for these populations.

Dr. Diane Gorgas, a professor of Emergency Medicine and the executive director of the Office of Global Health at OSUCOM, will be helping lead a workshop on Ethical Dilemmas in Global Health. Dr. Gorgas has been involved in global health work in Haiti since 2011, and has been instrumental in establishing neonatal resuscitation training programs all over the world. She will be giving a short presentation on Global Health Ethics, and then we will have an opportunity to discuss after!

Vaginal delivery is the most common way to deliver a baby worldwide, and home deliveries can be very common in several low- and middle-income countries. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce students to the process of delivery including the stages of labor, dilation, and what to do when no one else is around. This is a good lesson for everyone for rotations and potential work abroad.

Dr. Edward Dotson, an ENT surgeon at Ohio State, will be speaking to us about Project EAR. Dr. Dotson has served as President of this organization since 1995, where he has been dedicated to restoring hearing to underserved populations. Project EAR is a humanitarian organization which has focused on medically assisting many people in the Dominican Republic who are financially unable to access hearing healthcare.

Dr. Mahr is an enthusiastic and highly experienced global health physician who will show us how to confidently diagnose infections that are prevalent in areas all over the world (Dengue, Echinococcosis), teach us the real, BEST way to diagnose TB, and walk us through the most important scans you've never heard of.
And as a teaser for a future event, we'll be using DIY kits that we can use to train ourselves and other physicians how to do important procedures in low resource settings.

Dr. Benedict Nwomeh is the program director of Pediatric Surgery and Director of the Global Surgery Program at OSUWMC. Born in Nigeria, Dr. Nwomeh is a brilliant physician that has completed several residency and training programs.
As a pediatric surgeon, Dr. Nwomeh treats a variety of conditions in newborns and children including congenital anomalies, trauma, inflammatory bowel disease, and several other types of intestinal and lung diseases.

Dr. Jae Lee, the CEO and founder of Empower Through Health (ETH) will be presenting ETH's research on the Destigmatization of Mental Health in a low-income country, as well as their efforts to support the community and provide sustainable, ethical medical insurance. One of our members, Cara Noel, was involved in this project! Come through to support her, have a bite to eat, and listen to our wonderful speaker.

LIGHT put on a week full of fundraising and multiple events to celebrate and educate the OSUCOM community about global health. The week culminated in a banquet dinner with 4 distinguished guest speakers to highlight their accomplishments in global health during their time at OSU.
LIGHT teamed up with CRIS (Community Refugee and Immigration Services) for an informational talk on the important work that their organization does for the refugee community in Columbus.
LIGHT and the Office of Global Health will be hosted Dr. Sarah Barber who is the current director of the WHO Center for Health Development. She spoke of her experiences and research on universal health coverage.
We were joined by EM and Orthopedic residents who went over the basics of splinting, focusing on low resource environments. They presented the foundational principles of stabilizing fractures and dislocations. In the second half of our session, participants practiced creating splints from everyday items such as cardboard boxes, magazines, and shoelaces.
