Recommendation Letters

Recommendation letters are a vital part of your application to graduate school. Strong letters of support can make all of the difference. Weak and generic letters of recommendation can have the opposite effect. I typically write several letters of recommendation for my undergraduate students each year. Sometimes several of my students are applying to the same programs. Before you ask me to write you a letter of support, please consider the following.

Am I the right person to write you a letter?

I frequently have students for more than one class, or who work on a project with me. The longer I know you, the more detailed I can write about you as a student, and the more confident I can write about your potential to succeed in graduate school. I must be honest in my letter and assessment of you. If I had you for only one class and I didn't see you in office hours, my letter will be brief and perhaps a different professor will be able to write a stronger letter for you.

What I need from you:

I need your CV, cover letter, transcripts, a copy of your statement of purpose, and all application materials. I also need a list of programs you are applying to and their due dates. These help me write a detailed and custom tailored letter for you. The more I talk to you about your goals and interests, the stronger and more personal your letter will be. It is typically better if we start talking about your potential for graduate school long before your applications are due. I need at least one month to write and submit your letters.
