Osterhout Bible Church is located at 467 Lane Hill Rd, Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania 18657. We are a small congregation whose mission is threefold: to put forth every possible effort to proclaim the Gospel; to preach and live out the whole counsel of God; and to promote fellowship and spiritual growth among God's people. Acts 2:42 outlines four minimum essentials for the church: teaching, fellowship, communion (and baptism, the two ordinances) and prayer. We are independent and autonomously governed by the members, free from any interference by any ecclesiastical or political authority in the exercise of Divinely given duties and liberties.
Our Ministries include Sunday School for all ages, Children's Church, Good News Club for Kids Pre-K through grade 6, and Embassy Adult Care Center.
A Brief Historical Summary
The Osterhout Bible Church was conceived by the union and vision of some eighteen persons in January 1949. During the course of that year, the Osterhout Bible Church was born with forty-five charter members.
The Osterhout Bible Church has seen many changes from its humble beginning when it started out with no tangible assets or existing physical building on the land that had been donated by the Shupp family. It was from this dream to plant a church on this very spot that the building was first built in 1950. Whenever it became necessary to expand the church structure, building expansion construction projects were done in order to address the needs at those times.
The corporation is organized exclusively for religious, charitable, and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (or the corresponding provision of any future United States Revenue law), including, but not limited to, focus on missions at home and abroad. There will also continue to be a steadfast, Biblical ministry like we see set forth in 1Corinthians 15:58, “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” May we be found faithful as a church and as individual believers until the Lord calls us home, whether by rapture or by death.
Jesus said, "I am the Good Shepherd" [John 10:14-16]
Victor Decker was instrumental in planting the church at Osterhout. As its first Pastor, he helped to evangelize in this small community and discipled many who accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Pastor Decker was bi-vocationally a shepherd of the church and a sheep farmer. He frequently referred to shepherding in his pastoral messages making scripture come alive and relevant.
After concluding fifty years of faithful service to the Lord Jesus Christ, Pastor Decker handed over the shepherd staff to Brian Williams in 1999. Brian was first called to service as a missionary in Amazonas Brazil. Upon Pastor Decker's retirement, Brian was called by the Osterhout Bible Church to serve as their pastor. Pastor Williams has since assisted on his family's farm while performing the duties of shepherding the flock at Osterhout Bible Church.
The church at Osterhout will continue to count on pastors who are faithful to following the Lord Jesus Christ and serving Him as messengers of God's Word until Christ returns.
