History of oSTEM
In October 2005, IBM sponsored a focus group where students were able to voice their concerns and discuss issues relevant to LGBTQ+ communities at their respective colleges. oSTEM was created as a result of that meeting, with the mission of creating a inclusive community for LGBTQ+ students in STEM. By 2009, five chapters collaborated to create oSTEM, Inc.
History of oSTEM at UIC
oSTEM at UIC was founded in 2020, right before the COVID-19 pandemic. While the pandemic presented an unforeseen challenge, oSTEM at UIC was still able to make their presence known on campus, and create a large community for LGBTQ+ students in STEM at UIC. In 2021, oSTEM at UIC received the “Rookie Chapter of the Year” honor at oSTEM’s national conference. Unfortunately, due to oSTEM’s E-Board graduating, oSTEM at UIC was only active from 2020 until 2022. Then, in Spring of 2024, a few students and an EIEP staff member collaborated to revitalize oSTEM at UIC. oSTEM at UIC became a recognized student organization in Fall 2025, and have since continued the mission and intentions of our founding members.
