Native Species in Our Garden
We decided to only choose native plants in order to have our garden succeed with low maintenance. Also, many of these endangered butterflies need these native plants to pollinate. Therefore, as we replace our gardens and lands with invasive species, these butterflies are becoming more endangered. Our garden serves to support our local butterflies and pollinators, taking steps to counteract the biodiversity crisis.

Why Are Bloom Times Important?
When making a pollinator garden, it is important to have something blooming at all times through the season. When planning our garden, bloom times were one of our primary considerations in selecting our native species. We were able to create a blooming garden from April to October that supported our butterflies. We also made sure to spread out the plants that bloom at the same time to make our garden look full.
Why Choose Different Colours and Shapes?
Different colours and shapes are important so our butterflies have variety. Some butterfly species and other pollinators prefer different shapes to land on. For example, the Common Yarrow flower has a flat head, which makes it quite easy to land on. We also made sure to clump the similar shapes and colours together to make it easier for our visiting pollinators. By having a plethora of colours and shapes, we make sure our garden attracts as many species as possible.
