11-15 May 2026 @IRRI Headquarters, Philippines
This training workshop introduces participants to the ORYZA model using the new ORYZA User Interface (Oryza UI). The workshop will demonstrate how the UI simplifies model setup, data organization, and simulation runs, while also covering experimental data requirements for model calibration and evaluation, practical applications, and newly developed model features.
At the end of the training workshop, participants will be able to:
understand the basic operations of ORYZA using the new ORYZA User Interface;
identify and prepare the required input data for practical applications through the UI-guided workflow;
gain an overview of the concepts of parameterization, calibration, and model evaluation; and
run ORYZA model to generate outputs related to potential growth and yield, soil Carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, effects of abiotic stresses, and climate change impacts.
This course is delivered by the expert group responsible for the development of the ORYZA model. Participants are encouraged to engage with the resource persons to discuss interests beyond the scope of the training, including—but not limited to—collaboration opportunities, advanced model development, and extensions of the model for various applications.
Laptop Requirements
Participants must bring their own laptops meeting the following minimum specifications to ensure smooth installation and use of the ORYZA model and its new User Interface (UI):
User Access
Administrator privileges are required to allow proper installation and configuration of the software.
Operating System & Software
Windows 10/11, 64-bit recommended for the ORYZA UI.
Microsoft Office 2007 or a newer version.
Hardware Specifications
Minimum of 4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended for optimal performance of the ORYZA UI).
At least 50 GB of available hard drive space, including:
~500 MB for the ORYZA UI application, and
additional space for simulation outputs and data files.
Additional Requirements for ORYZA UI
Python is bundled with the application (no separate installation required).
An active internet connection is required during the training for downloading weather and soil datasets.
Venue
The Practical Applications of ORYZA in Rice Research training workshop will be held at IRRI Headquarters in Los Baños, Philippines. International participants are encouraged to arrive at least one day before the start of the program to allow time for adjustment and recovery from travel fatigue.
Los Baños is a small city located approximately 60 km south of Manila and is about 1.5 hours of travel, depending on traffic conditions from Manila International Airport. Detailed travel instructions will be provided after registration.
