We are the guardians of the "Nagy Gyula Bérház" in Nagyszalonta. Our aim is to renovate this historical monument, because we know that it has a lot of cultural significance.
About us
We are 10th grade students of the Arany János School in Nagyszalonta. Our team members are Zsanett Balogh, Vivien Páljános, Alexandra Lăzău, Ádám Szabó, Csongor Szemes Pásztor and Melisza Szűcs. We are all working to achieve the renovation of Gyula Nagy's Rent House.
We also have a friendship in which work is literally child's play, as we solve problems together through teamwork and cooperation.
Before we tell the story of the apartment building, we would like to introduce Gyula Nagy in a few words! Gyula Nagy was born on 13 October 1875. He and his wife Julianna Köteles had 5 children. When Julianna was pregnant with their 3rd child, they started building the tenement. The apartment house was built between 1911 and 1914, thanks to one of the best architects in town, Hidas. The land on which the tenement was built was owned by Gyula Nagy, who built the tenement on his own house. Gyula Nagy envisioned a "U" shaped building with 2 floors, a basement and an inner courtyard.
Following its construction
In 1914, the apartment building opens its doors. Gyula Nagy and his family built a part of the building for themselves in the courtyard, while the tenants were accommodated on the first and second floors. Two families lived on the first floor and three on the second. On the ground floor was the tailor's shop. The basement was used for storage.
Nationalisation, Communism
After the death of Gyula Nagy in 1948, the building was nationalized, which meant that the state became the owner of the apartment building. The residents left the tenement, while the tailoring industry, although nationalised, remained. Terror set in, and this period lasted until 1963, when the tailoring industry moved out.
The age of the polyclinic
After the tailoring industry moves out, a polyclinic is built on the site of the tenement. After the change of system, the polyclinic will continue to operate for another 8 years, after which the building will close for good.
The two projecting towers and the projecting main façade of Gyula Nagy's tenement house suggest that the building belongs to the Art Nouveau, neoclassical artistic movement.
