Once upon a time, there was a player.
I see the player you mean.
Yes. Take care. It has reached a higher level now. It can read our thoughts.
That doesn't matter. It thinks we are part of the game.
I like this player. It played well. It did not give up.
What did this player dream?

I blink a few times.
This player dreamed of sunlight and trees. Of fire and water. It dreamed it created. And it dreamed it destroyed. It dreamed it hunted, and was hunted. It dreamed of shelter.
Everything comes to life.
Give it a body, again.
Yes. Player...
Use its name.
Dreamer. Player of games.
Good.
I wince and quickly raise my arm to shield my eyes from such a bright glare of the sun. I take a few moments to just feel myself exist.
Take a breath, now. Take another. Feel air in your lungs. Let your limbs return. Yes, move your fingers. Have a body again, under gravity, in air. Respawn in the long dream. There you are. Your body touching the universe again at every point, as though you were separate things.
I breathe in the fresh air with a light calming gust of wind rushing past. It runs its fingers through my
Short curled hair, twisting it into tangles. I don’t mind, not in the slightest.
I move my feet ever so slightly to feel the rough texture of the soil and grass beneath the sole of my shoe. The light colour of my sneakers gets turned a slight shade of green as the grass smudges against them.
I finally bring my arm back down to my side in order to look around me. I stand in a tall grass field. I can feel the tall strands of green tickle the pads of my fingers as I run a hand along the top of them. It feels as if millions of small beings are kissing my hand as it passes by.
You. You. You are alive.
I look up after a minute to admire the sky. It shines the brightest of blues with millions of soft fluffy clouds slowly walking across the beauty of the blue canvas. The sun shining brightly in the sky as if to say,
and sometimes the player believed the universe had spoken to it through the sunlight that came through the shuffling leaves of the summer trees
and sometimes the player believed the universe had spoken to it through the light that fell from the crisp night sky of winter, where a fleck of light in the corner of the player's eye might be a star a million times as massive as the sun, boiling its planets to plasma in order to be visible for a moment to the player, walking home at the far side of the universe, suddenly smelling food, almost at the familiar door, about to dream again
“Shall we begin?”
I smile wide before I jump into a sprint.
I run through the field of grass pushing through it with loud bouts of laughter spilling from my lips. I trail my hand along the tops of the grass as I run happily.
Nothing but the sun kissing my skin almost as if to say, “I’ll be here” and the feeling of freedom as I choose where to go.
I shout at the top of my lungs as I see a cliff come into view.
I can hear the sound of huge waves crashing into a shore where the cliff is. There’s the ocean. I can smell the harsh sent of salted water that the wind blows up into the air.
Without hesitation, as I reach the end of the cliff, I jump.
I fall through the air with a shout of excitement. The wind lets my hair flow in every direction as I fall faster down to the water below before I finally break the surface between air and water.
I take a moment to feel the water completely surround me, welcoming me into her beauty with a warm feeling against my skin before I’m opening my eyes.
Plants and animals of all kinds and colours come to life in front of me. Fish swimming in families to no destination in particular, just happy to be swimming. Plants soaking up all of the sun's gentle warmth from below the waves allowing them to become the most beautiful shades of pink yellow and blue.
Suddenly I hear a small echoing chirp. I perk up and look to the noise to see a slick light blue, that could almost be taken as a white, dolphin swim up under my arm nuzzling into my side.
I smile wide as I gently stroke its back. It chirps again and nudges my arm as if to say “hold on”, so I do. I allow it to go under me as I hold on to its fin before the dolphin is rushing through the water.
Within only a few minutes we’re breaking the surface of the water allowing both of us to once again breathe in the air around us. I laugh as the dolphin underneath me trills happily swimming through the waves.
Eventually, the dolphin finds shore again and we part our ways. I thank the gracious creature with a pat on the head before it chirps and swims off only to jump gracefully in the air before finally disappearing into the thick blue sea along with their family.
I wave goodbye to it as it leaves with a sigh of contentment before I turn back around to see a forest covered in tall healthy oak trees.
Now it’s time to start expanding.
and sometimes the player believed the universe had spoken to it through the zeros and ones, through the electricity of the world, through the scrolling words on a screen at the end of a dream
A couple hours have passed by and I have chopped down enough standing trees to create an axe, pickaxe, sword, and shovel as well as several planks of wood to build myself a small cottage once I find a place to settle down in.
I send each weapon into the air only for them to sparkle and shine and disappear into nothing. They’re now able to be summoned whenever I so please.
I work on using a ring engraved into my left hand to get the planks wood to disappear as well for later availability.
I huff proud of myself before summoning forth my pickaxe and marching forward in search of a nearby cave.
I make a mental list of materials I need to acquire; stone, food, iron, coal, dirt, and some freshwater. With the list in mind, I stay on the lookout for trees that may contain some fresh red apples, or maybe a wild animal.
As I walk I discover so many wondrous things. I see stunning beautiful flowers of all kinds. Bright cherry red roses, soft baby pink tulips, sunshine yellow and snow white daisy’s, and even bring sunset orange ones too. I would be lying if I said I didn’t stop almost every time to admire the beauty and smell of each plant, and maybe I took some for future decoration as well.
As I walk I find an apple tree. The shining red fruits hangs from the tree ripe and ready for the taking, though they are quite high up. I huff and rush up to the tree to begin climbing to reach them.
I latch onto two tree branches and hoist myself up, letting my feet hold me up by the tough bark of the tree. I mange to push myself up to sit on a little nook between branches. I hum as I reach for an apple right beside me.
I pluck it from its branches and begin eating it. As I snack on the delicious red apple, I pluck several others off the branches at let them disappear into the magic that is my ring for later safe keeping.
Once satisfied I jump down with a huff. I raise my hand and allow my pick axe to materialise into my hand. I swing it a few times before I continue forward until I finally reach a deep cave.
throwing my pickaxe into my right hand, I take a deep breath filled with adrenaline of both anxiety and excitement and preparing to enter the darkness that is the cave.
I can hear my heavy footsteps against the smooth stone as I make my way through the cave. I spot a large patch of coal on the ground and instantly get to work on mining it down.
I raise my pickaxe up high and slam it back down into the patch of coal with a grunt escaping my lips. My brows furrow with intense concentration and determination as I slam my pickaxe back down hard. The force of the action allows an echo to spread throughout the interior of the cave as I repeat this action countless times until the coal crumbles and is ready for use.
I huff out-breaths and wipe the back of my hand across my forehead that has small droplets of sweat falling down before I tap the ring of my finger and point it towards the coal. The coal disappears into the ring.
I move to lean up against the cold cave wall as I tap my ring twice. It brings up a hologram in front of me, or otherwise known as the “inventory”. It holds everything I collect during my travels and allows me to craft things with the materials I obtained.
I take four planks of oak wood and build a makeshift carry-on crafting table. I carefully place it down in front of me and begin the task of making better weapons with the stone I’ve found and create torches.
I make a new set of stone weapons and throw them into the air for later. I make a torch and allow the crafting table to go back into my inventory.
It takes me a few minutes and quite a few tries to light the torch on fire before it finally sparks to life in intense heat and a beautiful dance of colours. I admire the light emitting from the torch before suddenly I feel a sharp gust of wind fly past me and the sound of something getting stuck into the cave wall behind me.
I quickly turn around to see an arrow. I take in a sharp breath as I throw my torch into my left hand and summon my stone sword into my right. I look forward and there it is.
There in front of me stands a just about 7-foot-tall off-white skeleton. It moves slowly in a weak limp as its bones shake and clack together, the sound echoing through the cave loudly in an annoying rhythm. It carries a nicked weak bow and arrow in its boney hand. Some strings are splitting loose as small chips of wood threaten to fall off as the skeleton reaches behind itself to grab another arrow and prepare to shoot.
I react quickly. I rush up to the enemy gracefully dodging its failed attempts at firing at me before I’m jumping up and slashing downwards onto the skeleton. Some of its bones fall off as it scrambles to prepare another shot, but ends up in failure as I stab through its chest causing it to collapse to the ground in a pile of useless unconnected bones.
I pant out heavy breaths as I collect its remains for my inventory. I smile satisfied with myself before I decide I have had enough cave exploration for today. It seems much to dangerous with the low amount of materials and experience I have. I can always come back to this cave later.
So I rush out the way I came, the torch lighting my way in a fierce battle of heat and light before I find myself back outside in the open forest.
But this time it is no longer day. It is night.
Dark peaceful night.
The dark blue-black sky above is coated it millions of beautiful glowing stars. They each sparkle and dance in their own special way as the man in the moon greets me with a welcoming cold glow as if to say, “rest, you have done enough for today”. Although he may be right I can’t seem to contain my excitement for what the wonders of the night may hold.
So, I find myself sprinting again. I run fast through the forest, a rush of pure adrenaline and hardly any fear pours through my veins as I hear the sound of arrows barely missing me, the hissing of the unnatural green monsters, groaning and moaning of fallen explorers and travellers trying to take me with them.
I ignore them all as I feel the cold air of the night nip at the ends of my fingers, tips of my ears, and skin of my cheeks turning them a bright soft flushed pink as I run.
But then I stop. I come to a skidding halt once I see another mysterious being stand in front of me.
A being covered in long black limbs that stands about 8 feet tall with glowing purple sparks admitting from everywhere. It takes my breath away at the pure beauty of it.
Long hind legs, and sharp long jagged claws for hands. two massive regal horns sit proudly on its head with small ones resting beside them, and sharp fangs sticking out from its mouth which stretches the entire expanse of its face. Its eyes are sharp and pointed and emit a deep enchanting purple that glows as it frantically looks around.
It makes small noises as it clutches a chunk of dirt close to its chest in an almost anxious fashion.
Endermen. That’s what they are called. A nation of lost explorers sent to a different reality that strived off of close to nothing and evolved into scared lost beings that travel the lands in hopes to find purpose.
It is said to not glance at them in the eyes for they will become hostile and attack any poor traveller that failed to follow simple rules.
Yet here I am, staring at the interesting creature with nothing but complete awe in my gaze. I should look away, I know I have to, but I can’t seem to break my gaze. It’s so… fantastical. So… enchanting.
It seems to feel my gaze and slowly turns to face me.
We lock eyes.
And yet… no one strikes. No one moves. Nothing happens but a careful search of each other. It seems to study my form closely, I do the same.
“⊑⟒⌰⌰⍜?” It speaks softly. I try to conceal my gasp as it leans down almost as if to reach my level.
“Can… can you talk?” I ask it with a slow tilt of my head.
It blinks back at me a few times. Then it trills.
“⌰⍜⍜☍ ⎎⍜⍀ ⏁⊑⟒ ⟒⊬⟒.” Suddenly it disappears in a burst of glowing purple sparks.
I stand in stunned silence replaying the events that just occurred.
That was truly something else.
I’ll have to write it down once I obtain leather, feathers, paper and ink.
I take a deep breath in and out, recollecting myself, before looking straight ahead and lighting up with excitement.
A village! Just off in the distance. Right where the sun seems to be raising too.
It shines across the horizon, slowly chasing the moon away and greeting everyone with her bright warm beams once again.
I sigh as I let my torch burn out and put it back in my inventory before making my way toward the waking village.
Once I arrive all of the villagers are up and moving around quickly. Chatting amongst each other, selling trades, keeping crops fresh, and everything is running smoothly.
I am greeted warmly as I enter the village. Several different villagers approach me with words of, “Traveller! You must be tired after your adventures!” Or “I can offer you the finest trades in the entire village, Traveller!” Or even “Oh great Traveller, we humbly welcome you into the small expanse of our village!”
I smile happily to each of them with countless “thank you”s falling from my lips as I walk through the village.
Eventually, the villagers return back to their daily routine, some rushing to their living quarters to collect gifts for my arrival.
They’re all too kind to me.
I’m welcomed into the village with open arms, I’m given many materials that’ll help me in my adventures, and I’ve gained knowledge of this small village.
They’ve shared with me on how it was founded and how villagers are different from explorers. They are different in the way that they do not possess our ring connected to our inventory. They never just spawned in a feild of grass with nothing but a world to explore and determination in their hearts.
It’s all quite fascinating honestly. I’ve never even thought of listening to tales from the villagers before. And they’re stories are quite expensive. They speak with excitement about tales long forgotten but continue to keep their memories alive.
They tell stories of travellers, explorers long past.
Ones with eager excitement as they try new things, challenges, changing and coding the world to shape however they so desire. They make things that shouldn’t be possible, they smile at the creations they make and they do it all with the ring on their finger.
They tell stories of humans with majestical wings. Wings only attainable by reaching the limits of what is possible and expanding beyond. Wings as dark as a raven or as bright and colourful as a parrot or as see through and delicate like a fairy’s. All flying up high with speeds unimaginable, laughter ringing through the trees.
Stories of scientists and geniuses creating and mixing potions and magic that carve the world around them. Ones that destroy all their enemies but strengthen their allies. Even ones that travel through time and different dimensions. Ones of fire and endless abyss.
The villagers tell tales of countless wars erupting left and right, explosions of all kinds. Screaming, fighting, crying mourning and yet they all preserver and keep building more.
Explorers of different kinds. Humans, Foxes, fairies, goat hybrids, pirates, creatures of the end, monsters of the Nether, robots, phantoms, Gods, travellers of time, mermaids, witches and hundreds more.
And with every story shared, passed down from generation to generation, I’ve noticed one thing.
Each are with their own people, friends. Laughing and discovering as they build nations, homes, towers, and even bonds.
I must meet these people.
So, Soon though I had to take my leave from the village. I have to sadly turn down the offer to live in one of the small cottages offered to me as I say my goodbyes and plenty of thank yous to the ever so kind village. I happily wave the villagers goodbye as I walk away and disappear into the forest with a wide smile on my face.
And I meet people.
I meet the ones the villagers talk about.
I meet a bright clueless traveller of time with fluffy hair and clocks all over who says sweetly, “The path hurts to stay on, but I am so excited to meet the new people and things I see when I travel each time.”
I meet a man adorned with weapons and armour. He wore blue goggles on his head with a dark long sleeve and a wide beaming smile on his face as he talks about his adventures. He speaks “I was never truly sure of why I was here, but I feel as though I am in the world to change the world.”
I meet a bubbly man with pastel blue hair carrying a clipboard in one hand and a golden coin with the letters ‘MCC’ in the other and he says, “I’ve met many champions, all working together for a title, and each of them are just as spectacular as the last.”
I meet an older man with wings as dark as a raven and robes as green as the forest who shares words of wisdom, “Things, buildings, they can be replaced. People can’t be replaced. I’m not losing anyone else. Keep this to heart, it’s useful for the ones you care for.”
I meet a blond-haired man with a red sweater and wings as bright and colourful as a rainbow’s. He speaks softly, “We work hard… but we clean up harder.”
I meet two blonde siblings, a brother and sister. Both shark hybrids swimming along freely. The brother, ever so cautious said, “trust is earned, not given.” While the sister giggled and said, “He’s just protective, take risks with people!”
I meet hundreds more, each with their own advice and stories of adventures long past.
Some miss others, like the tall blonde shapeshifter with a broken mask and green hoodie, while others have kept the ones they love close, like a little goat boy and his son. Some have slowly died down on exploring, like a woman with hair as purple as the galaxy, while others have played for years, like another woman with long black hair and a purple puffy sweater.
Some have now passed on but shall be remember for centuries to come. I remember bowing down to a sword with a red cape and golden crown carefully placed on top before a young pig comes up and tickles my ear, causing a giggle to fall past my lips. I left not long after with a heavy heart but a new found determination.
There are times it is sad, in the long dream. It creates worlds that have no summer, and it shivers under a black sun, and it takes its sad creation for reality.
To cure it of sorrow would destroy it. The sorrow is part of its own private task. We cannot interfere.
I could go on for hours on end, sharing each great achievement and discovery ever found, but I’ve done my travelling. I’ve explored lots and I only deem it fitting to find rest.
I’ve travelled through the land for hours, collecting many materials and knowledge from passing explorers, traders, witches and a few other villages.
I encountered a portal with a black obsidian border and purple entrance. I walked through with hesitation only to be greeted with the hot air and strange beings of the Nether. It was new but I managed to make my way through it all with burn marks stretched across my arms showing my resilience.
I spoke with the piglins and understood their history. I admired the forests, the caverns, the abandoned fortress and many more. I fought the relentless beasts of the Nether. Douged each fire ball created by blazes and ghasts, countered each attack brought on my the wither skeletons and use their heads as a sigh of victory.
Once satisfied, I left and continued forward.
I’ve managed to locate the demension the people spoke of, The End. I found it’s portal and made the journey into this unknown world. I saw the dragon everyone seeks to destroy to show their strength. To me, that sounded hostile.
So I approached the dragon. Her wings were large and held up to show dominance, her teeth blared and her claws digging into the ground. I stood a couple feet away from her, not moving. I lowered my blade to the ground and waited for her to respond.
She walked forward, hesitant if her cautious steps were anything to go off of. She sniffed the air around me before huffing with a nod and flying off.
I smiled, knowing that she knew I mean no harm and turned to explore.
But through all of it, all of my struggles and discoveries have been in search of the perfect place to build my cottage. A house.
My home.
Does it know that we love it? That the universe is kind?
Sometimes, through the noise of its thoughts, it hears the universe, yes.
I am now dressed in shining purple netherite armour clicking against itself and a deep dark grass green cape draped over my shoulders. I have changed from old damaged white sneakers to tall black combat boots with a pink flowing knee-high dress and a corset along with long black shorts underneath. Long Fingerless gloves adore my hands as I carry a weapons case on my back with my brown hair hidden by the hood of my cloak. A compass rests on my neck with a clock in my pocket and goggles on my head.
I’ve collected all of this. I have learned so many new things and all for this one moment.
I let a small gasp leave me as I finally found it. The perfect spot for my home.
Mountains are placed everywhere, surrounding a small valley big enough for a village to reside in. But what makes this place stand out from all the rest is how the mountains have naturally created a bridge stretching across each other.
I smile wide, gently pushing my hood back, as I rush to the centre of it all and begin.
I throw down a crafting table along with a chest and throw anything I don’t need inside. I throw down my shulker boxes and transfer materials. Once organized, I turn to the land before me and mentally plan where to locate my house.
I huff and grab chunks of dirt and plan the base layout roughly before taking out oak planks and replacing the dirt with it. I create tall walls that will be able to hold many paintings and photos on the inside. I make it two stories high with the reminder to make a basement sometime in the future. A slanted roof was what I’d decided upon.
Once finished with the house itself now comes the decorations.
I giggle happily as I grab the many cherry red roses I’ve collected from my shulker boxes. I place bushes of roses on the outside of the house in the front and then around the back where the garden shall be. I rush inside and begin with the interior.
I build the kitchen. A stove, a fridge and plenty of counter space for cooking. I rush to grab my food and throw it into the barrels and fridge. And every kitchen must have an island.
Next the living room. A couch, a coffee table, and a functional fireplace. Though I don’t think I’ll ever light it out of the fear that I might burn the house down. The thought makes me add a gate to the front of it.
Rush upstairs and there I’ll put my room along with storage. A big pink bed with a fairy net along with a whole wall of plants. I move all the chests from outside inside to the other wall of my room.
About two hours later and it’s finally done.
My home.
Here it stands. Built with my own two hands and a heart made of determination. It holds everything dearest to me with the promises of tomorrow, the promise of more memories and happiness to be made.
In this small valley is where I begin my adventure.
I smile, satisfied with myself as I enter my finished house for the first time. I trace my hand along the wall as I walk. I let it slide along the smooth surface of the kitchen island. I feel the sanded-down wood of the staircase railing as I walk to the second floor. I place my hand gently down onto the soft fluffy pink bed before I shrug off my armour, cape and weapons holder and fall face-first onto the bed with a hum of contentment.
I stare up at the glass ceiling that allows me to watch the stars above slowly flicker into the night sky as the sun dips below the horizon once again.
The sun bids her goodnights and kind wishes before disappearing completely, and I find myself following along.
My body feels calm and not a single thing is out of place here.
So, for the first time, I slowly let my eyes flutter close…

Calming music plays…
The atoms of the player were scattered in the grass, in the rivers, in the air, in the ground. A woman gathered the atoms; she drank and ate and inhaled; and the woman assembled the player, in her body.
And the player awoke, from the warm, dark world of its mother's body, into the long dream.
And the player was a new story, never told before, written in letters of DNA. And the player was a new program, never run before, generated by a sourcecode a billion years old. And the player was a new human, never alive before, made from nothing but milk and love.
You are the player. The story. The program. The human. Made from nothing but milk and love.
I lean back in my chair with a sigh as I look at my other monitor. A smile graces my features as I see the familiar rush of calm and pure bliss run through me.
I let myself bathe in the longing feeling of nostalgia as memories of first opening the small little block app fills my mind. The way I stumbled around the flat world and built whatever I desired brings me a sense of joy and humour at how scared I was to ever move away from creative.
Spotify slowly lets “Sweden By C148” fade out. I hum the last few notes before my headset falls silent. The room around me falls silent. Not a sound is made.
And then I hear a familiar ping. A ping saying I am no longer alone.
A voice speaks up happily.
“Yo, Dreamer!”
I chuckle. “Hey! Oh, Don’t forget to say hi to chat, they can get pissy when they don’t have attention.”
“Ah, right right of course of course. Hello, fuckers- oh wait I mean chat!”
I laugh loudly at that.
“You still have your server open?”
I nod although no one can see it. “Yup.”
“Epicccc, lemme in?”
I smirk with a huff before letting the memories fall back to just memories kept safely in the back of my mind as I sit back up straight and place my hands back onto the lighting-up keyboard and sharp mouse. A new song starts up on Spotify.

But it would be so easy to tell them...
Too strong for this dream. To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.
I will not tell the player how to live.
The player is growing restless.
I will tell the player a story.

And so, the adventure has just begun again, player.
The adventure may be trapped behind make-believe screens but everything else? Everything else is held behind laughter, smiles and memories.
Although this tale may have been repeated several times, maybe you’d like to join us again? We may be doing the same thing as the rest, but that’s just the fun of it.
That’s the fun of the game.
The fun of a game that has connected millions of people from across the world. The game that has helped so many people through fundraisers and smiling charities. Hardships and the best times of peoples lives. The game that seems so simple to play, and while yes that may be true, it is so much more than just a game.
Minecraft will always be more than just a silly little pixel block game.
Minecraft will forever and always be Minecraft.
and the universe said I love you
and the universe said you have played the game well
and the universe said everything you need is within you
and the universe said you are stronger than you know
and the universe said you are the daylight
and the universe said you are the night
and the universe said the darkness you fight is within you
and the universe said the light you seek is within you
and the universe said you are not alone
and the universe said you are not separate from every other thing
and the universe said you are the universe tasting itself, talking to itself, reading its own code
and the universe said I love you because you are love.
And the game was over and the player woke up from the dream.
And the player began a new dream.
And the player dreamed again, dreamed better.
And the player was the universe.
And the player was love.
