Sophia sits at a booth table. Dressed nicely for her date. Flowers at her side clearly waiting for someone to show up. Her phone rests on the table, waiting to buzz from the date she was supposed to meet. Eventually the waitress comes over with another glass of water.
[LIZ]
Still no show?
[SOPHIA]
I’m… I’m sure she’ll be here. Just… any minute now?
[LIZ]
Can I at least get you started on something? You’ve been waiting for an hour now, I bet you’re starving.
[SOPHIA]
Well I don’t wanna be rude and start eating without her.
[LIZ]
An appetizer. Let me get you an appetizer.
[SOPHIA]
But-
[LIZ]
On the house.
Liz walks away to place the order. Sophia watches her leave, sighing and sliding down in her seat. She runs her hands down her face and lets herself consider that her date will not be showing up. However part of her still hangs onto the hope as more people begin leaving the restaurant.
Liz comes back with a plate of food. She shoves the flowers aside and places the plate in front of Sophia with a bright smile.
[LIZ]
Careful. It’s hot off the stove. If you don’t like it, lemme know. I’ll fetch ya something else
[SOPHIA]
Oh… I wouldn’t wanna be a bother. I’ve already been difficult as is.
[LIZ]
Oh hush. You got stood up. I get plenty of sad sacks marching in here getting stood up. And it’s my job to cheer em up.
[SOPHIA]
Well maybe she got busy and just… forgot to tell me.
[LIZ]
‘Her’ huh?
Liz looks around the restaurant, finding it mostly empty. She catches a coworker's gaze and waves to them before sitting across from Sophia. Sophia startles as Liz reaches forward and takes a bite of the food. Lounging in the booth with a sigh.
[LIZ]
Her loss then. I mean look at you. Dressed up, flowers ready, waiting for someone who will never show. She’s an idiot for passing all of that up!
[SOPHIA]
But she… gods, I’m not good with women. I talk too much or whatever but she seemed into it. Like… she wanted me to talk more! Which was just so…
[LIZ]
Talk about what?
[SOPHIA]
My interests. I’m… a fashion’s student. So I told her all about my designs and my reasons for the designs. As well as fashion history and all sorts of other boring stuff.
[LIZ]
Doesn’t sound boring to me. Not very often I run into someone so interested in fashion. And you know, like, the history about it?
Sophia takes a bite of her food. Smiling sheepishly at Liz.
[SOPHIA]
Yes. Like why certain styles in the Victorian era were popularized or how women conformed dramatically through their attire.
[LIZ]
Yeah this girl you were talking to is missing out. Fuck her.
Liz leans forward in her seat. A sparkle in her eyes that has Sophia covering her face to hide her blush.
[LIZ]
You should-
[MANAGER]
Aye! Liz! Back to work! How many times I gotta tell ya to stop flirtin with customers!
Liz’s manager calls from the kitchen, out of view. Liz groans and slides out of the booth.
[LIZ]
Duty calls.
[SOPHIA]
Right…
[LIZ]
Here.
Liz pulls out her notepad, flicking her pen open she scribbles something down onto the pages hastily. Tearing it off and handing it to Sophia. Sophia finds Liz’s phone number written there with a heart beside it.
[LIZ]
I get off work today at nine. We should do something. Hopefully something where you tell me all about your fashion interests.
Sophia gapes at her in shock.
[SOPHIA]
I- O-okay! Sure! Yes, I would like that.
[LIZ]
Good.
Liz winks at her before reaching across the table and grabbing the flowers meant for Sophia’s date. She brings them up to her nose, sniffs them and smiles.
[LIZ]
See ya around, cutie.
Liz walks out of view and Sophia squeals in her seat.
