1973-1974 ended my History of Leyton Orient 1965-1974. The history continues with this season albeit it has been penned 49 year later. I will attempt to read my scrapbook for that season and add some 'bones' to the fixture stats.Players: We lost Arber (to Barking), Bowyer (to Nottingham Forest) and O'Shaughnessy (to Harlow Town) and gained Cunningham, Gray, Grealish, Mooney, Possee and Roeder, all but Possee (from Crystal Palace, now there's a surprise) from the youth team. The new design on the cover of the programme showed a wyvern standing on three legs. Had a back leg been off the ground I may have been able to suggest a sex. What did we glean from the programme? We missed promotion by a point allowing Carlisle to go up. Mickey Bullock had been top scorer with 16 goals followed by Fairbrother on 14 and Queen on 12. In the Mid-Week League we finished third, six points behind champions Portsmouth. Peter Johnson and Dean Mooney top scored with ten goals apiece. In the S.E. Counties League we finished second, five points behind Chelsea. Dean Mooney top scored with 37 goals and Billy Bragg got 21. Player of the Year was Faibrother and one of the Supporters of the Year was a Dave Dodd of Parnell Road E3. He won a trophy and free travel to away games for the season. We were expecting a book on the history of Orient FC from Neil Kaufman and Alan Ravenhill. The Evening Standard's Jill Palmer had a column, Oriental Natter. Articles on Ricky Heppolette and Laurie Cunningham.

03 Aug 1974 Away to West Ham United in the Texaco Cup. (L 1-0). In front of 16,338 with the Hammers fielding Day, Taylor and Holland we lost to a Billy Bonds goal. There was only one programme for these three matches which listed a squad for each team. Team: Jackson, Fisher, Roffey, Hoadley, Boyle, Walley, Fairbrother, Heppolette, Brisley, Queen, Cunningham sub Bennett.06 Aug 1974 Away to Southampton in the Texaco Cup (L 2-1 Fairbrother). They were eventual runners-up to Newcastle in the final. Team: Jackson, Fisher, Roffey, Hoadley, Harris, Walley, Fairbrother, Heppolette, Bennett, Queen, Possee.10 Aug 197 Home to Luton Town Texaco Cup (D 2-2 Walley, Queen). Some 5,443 saw the first game of the season. Team: Jackson, Fisher, Roffey, Hoadley, Harris, Walley, Fairbrother, Heppolette, Bullock, Queen, Possee.17 Aug 1974 Home to Manchester United (L 0-2). 17,772 saw this match. Possee made his league début for us. Team: Jackson, Fisher, Roffey, Hoadley, Harris, Walley, Fairbrother, Heppolette, Bullock, Queen, Posse.
