Organizing and Cleaning Tips for Parents

Let’s be honest—life with kids (and cats 🐱) can get messy fast. Between spills, crumbs, mystery smudges, and fur tumbleweeds rolling across the floor, it sometimes feels like cleaning is a full-time job. But over the years, I’ve discovered a few simple, budget-friendly, and environmentally conscious routines that make the chaos a lot more manageable.

Here are our go-to organizing and cleaning tips that help keep things (mostly) under control—without spending a ton or relying on harsh chemicals.

1. Vinegar and Baking Soda Are Cleaning Superheroes

You don’t need a cabinet full of expensive, single-use cleaners. White vinegar and baking soda can clean almost everything:

Kitchen surfaces
Bathroom sinks and tubs
Stained coffee mugs and dishes
Pet accidents (thanks, Lucipurr)

Mix vinegar with water in a spray bottle for an all-purpose cleaner. Sprinkle baking soda on surfaces before scrubbing for extra power. It's safe for kids and pets, super cheap, and doesn’t leave behind any fake lemon-chemical smell.

2. Reuse Rags Instead of Paper Towels

Paper towels disappear faster than snacks in a house with kids. We switched to a bin of soft, reusable cleaning rags (old shirts and towels cut into squares work great!).

Keep a small laundry basket under the sink for the used ones and just toss them in with a regular load. Less waste, more savings.

3. Teach the Kids to Help (Yes, It’s Possible!)

Even little ones can help clean if you make it part of the routine:

Spray and wipe the table with vinegar solution
Sort laundry by color
Sweep or vacuum small spaces (my kids loved the handheld vac when they were younger)

Every night, we do a quick 10-minute tidy-up as a family. Set a timer and see how much you can get done—put away toys, straighten the couch, dishes in the sink, surfaces wiped. It’s a small habit that keeps things from snowballing into overwhelming messes.

5. Make Organization Easy to Stick With

You don’t need fancy containers or a label maker (though I do love a good label!).

Use bins or baskets to corral clutter
Keep things low and accessible for the kids
Donate what you don’t use regularly—it’s less to clean!

Even our cats know where the toy basket is (though they still prefer cardboard boxes).

6. Celebrate the Small Wins

Is the house spotless? Never. But if the dishes are done, the floor isn’t crunchy, and no one stepped in cat barf today—I call that a success.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a home that feels peaceful, functional, and just a little bit less chaotic. These simple, budget- and eco-friendly routines help us get there.

At the end of the day, keeping a home clean and organized doesn’t mean it has to be perfect—it just has to work for you and your family. With a few simple systems, mindful habits, and a little creativity, even the busiest, messiest days can feel more manageable. It’s all about progress over perfection and finding routines that fit your real life—not some picture-perfect version of it.
