Environmental Studies Major
Class of 2020
Seth spent eight and a half years in the military as a firefighter, during that time earning an associate’s degree in fire science before leaving the military and transferring to the University of Oregon to pursue studies in conservation and land management. Seth has since focused primarily on subjects related to environmental justice, indigenous people/tribes of the Pacific Northwest, settler colonialism, and decolonization. Outside of school Seth can likely be found enjoying family time (with spouse and two kids) at one of the many local parks. Seth’s favorite hobby is playing pen and paper role playing games with family and friends.

Marie Moore grew up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and it was this early exposure that gave her a love for biodiversity and ecosystems processes. She is a Senior majoring in Environmental Science, with a focus on forest biology and ecology. She has experience working with and cultivating native landscaping. When she is not studying, she enjoys volunteering with GrassRoots Garden-FOOD for Lane County, exploring Oregon’s diverse landscapes, and spending time with her family (preferably at a winery).

Jane grew up on the coast in Tillamook, Oregon. She is passionate about community and maintaining forest ecosystems. While she is experienced in indoor lab work, you can also find her outside collecting data. Most notably she is involved with conifers and red alder. Besides tree species, she has also worked with invasive plant species, particularly Scotch Broom. She is working her way towards research and science managing. When she is not doing science focused work, she enjoys expressing herself through art, music, and dance.

Sarah is passionate about the environment and loves applying her knowledge of science and geographic information system (GIS) to conservation and management. She looks forward to shaping environmental policy in the future. Her favorite fields of science are geology and chemistry. In her free time, you'll catch Sarah at the pool, the river, or at the local park.

Marina grew up in Portland and Molalla, Oregon. Her career in Earth sciences has been driven by a deep curiosity and love for landscapes and ecology. Her passion for fieldwork was inspired during three years as a volunteer search and rescue team leader in Multnomah County, OR. Alongside a rich background in Earth science coursework, Marina studies Spanish literature, and spent a year at the Universidad de Sevilla in Spain. She is interested in translation and cross-cultural collaboration as essential aspects of science communication. Outside of school and work, Marina can be found cooking for her family and friends, practicing yoga, or hiking with her cattle dog, Josie.

David's passion for Environmental science began at a young age through backpacking trips with his family, which developed a deep connection with nature. This passion has spurred his desired to further study environmental ecological processes. His personal focus has been on human resource sustainability, biomimicry, and a wide understanding of the Anthropocene age.

Kristi was raised in the small town of Lafayette, Oregon and after high school she decided Environmental Science was the path that would lead her to her passion for educating and working with the public on the importance of environmental issues and sustainable solutions. Kristi has a strong science background in biology, geology, and paleontology. She loves to play video games and cuddle with her kitties.

Nick is from the town of Powell, Wyoming, where he graduated from Northwest College with an associate of arts in music. Nick transferred to the University of Oregon to continue his education in Environmental Science, focusing on life sciences. Through his course work, Nick gained knowledge and experience in ecological research and GIS. Outside of his academic pursuits, Nick is an avid outdoorsman and musician. When he isn’t exploring Oregon’s vast forests and natural areas, you can find him playing music in the Eugene area.

Sakina grew up in Pune, India, and moved to The Netherlands at the age of 10, and then to Oregon when 15. Her sociocultural exposure to these diverse environments and curiosity towards the sciences heavily influenced her academic path in Earth and physical sciences. She is interested in learning about issues of environmental justice and racism, and regularly participates in climate action organisations. Besides school, she enjoys philosophy, painting, hiking and spending time with her friends and family.

Marinn grew up in Damascus, Oregon, and began her academic journey with an Associates Degree at Clackamas Community College, where she aspired to transfer to the University of Oregon and initially pursue architecture. After exploring a few outdoor field classes that sparked her interest, she decided to invest her time elsewhere by focusing on Environmental Studies. Her interests lie in architecture, graphic design, oceanography, and physical geography. Outside of her academic environment, Marinn loves to go camping, hiking, kayaking, and also enjoys art, and dancing.

Sara grew up in Beaverton, Oregon, and moved to Eugene in 2002 to pursue her undergraduate degree at the University of Oregon. After graduating with a BA in Planning, Public Policy and Management with minors in Spanish and Latin American studies, Sara worked for a community development nonprofits in Portland, Eugene, and Rio de Janeiro. Her path to pursue an interdisciplinary Masters degree began while working at the Willamette National Forest on community building and anti-racism efforts within the agency and with other outdoor- related organizations. While not at the UO Sara can be found leading youth outdoor programs, camping, hiking, and spending time with her nieces and nephews.
Willamalane Park and Recreation District is responsible for maintenance and operation of recreational spaces and natural areas within their district in Springfield, Oregon. Their mission statement is as follows: “We make it our mission to deliver exceptional parks and recreation to enrich the lives of everyone we serve.” (Willamalane, 2019).
Willamalane Park and Recreation District has many projects and programs within their 1,500 acres of natural areas that include recreation areas for hiking, biking, playgrounds, sports fields, and 10 waterfront areas. They manage Dorris Ranch, and newly acquired land at Thurston Hills. In both areas, there is a focus on habitat restoration and protection of greenspace, while encouraging its public enjoyment. Specifically, there are programs at Dorris Ranch that allow citizens to immerse themselves in natural history and become aware of environmental management concerns. Thurston Hills, previously under private ownership, is less developed and includes valuable oak savannah habitat. This particular ecosystem and its importance to native species is the primary focus of current research and monitoring.

The Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) is a service-learning program offered at the University of Oregon, through the Environmental Studies department. Student leaders, in collaboration with local community partners, participate in conservation management research and environmental education projects. The program provides opportunities for students to engage in applied science through fieldwork, as well as gaining profession skills in creating protocols and management recommendations.
