The teachings of the Order are divided by rank and degree into three circles: Outer; Inner and Secret.
The first five degrees take the first degree novice through the basics of history and theology for old Paganism, Wicca (the Path of the Wise) and Universalism, together with the history of Secret Societies, ancient and modern. During these three degrees, the novice moves from novice to adeptus minor once the first degree is completed, then after the third degree is completed adeptus major, through the remaining degrees of the first circle.
At the completion of the fifth degree, the adept is declared a master and must decide whether to remain as a member of the Outer Circle, or continue on.
The sixth through fifteenth degrees focus on the hidden teachings of the ages, both in history and in practice. Building upon the historic understanding already imparted in the first five degrees regarding theological evolution and the development of mystery schools and secret societies, the members of the inner circle learn about universal practices and rituals, the use of such practices within various groups in the ancient and modern worlds. Each degree has its own specific title, but all members of these degrees retain the title master.
At the completion of the fifteenth degree, the master must decide whether to remain within the Inner circle, or to seek entry into the upper degrees.
Those who wish to continue may apply for entry to the Inner Circle. Their existing knowledge will be tested, and background checks performed. If they are rejected, they can apply again after a waiting period of one year and correction of whatever issues caused their rejection. For those who are accepted, they are declared grandmasters and may receive the sixteenth through twentieth degrees.
It is in these degrees that the grandmaster learns the secrets of the Order of Hermes itself, is trained in its specific rituals and is according the fullest rights and privileges within the order.
A single degree exists above the twentieth. This twenty-first degree can only be entered by invitation of the existing members of the circle. The members of the twenty-first degree are accorded the title proctor and the proctor general who heads the Order of Hermes is elevated from among them by the Archpriest of the Church of the New Aeon him/herself.
