Hi! I'm Sam, and I run Next Chapter.
English is my passion - clichéd, but true! I live and breathe every aspect of teaching the subject, which is why I want to share my experience with others (and keep learning along the way).
I spent ten years teaching a range of English qualifications in UK secondary schools across the 11-19 age range, including as a head of department. I did this alongside completing an MSt in Advanced Subject Teaching at the University of Cambridge, with a research specialism in A Level English curricula and pedagogy.
I then left teaching to become an English subject expert for a global exam board. This public-facing role has enhanced my knowledge of UK and international assessment, allowing me to speak to hundreds of schools and colleges about the ways they teach English. I also chair the Pride Global Staff Network.
I am a confident public speaker and am fluent in both English and Spanish, with a good working knowledge of French and Italian. Before teaching, I worked across a variety of industries including journalism, broadcasting, retail, film, and regulated businesses. Additionally, I have direct experience of the following:
Curriculum design
Academic research and writing
B2C and B2B marketing and comms
Data analysis
EDIB principles and implementation
Recruitment
Content creation (text and audio)
Governance and compliance
Safeguarding
Stakeholder relationship management.
In my spare time, you'll find me either fussing over my dog, watching tennis or (predictably!) reading anything and everything.
