Jack Hurd, the narrartor of the novel, is a 12 year old Christian boy who lives in Maine with his parents. The Hurd family owns a farm where Jack spends his time tending to the animals. Jack is a loyal and protective foster brother to Joseph.
Joseph Brook is a 14 year old deliquent boy who has previously been convicted for assaulting a teacher in Stone Mountain. Now living with his new foster family the Hurds, he is learning a new way of life in Maine. Joseph has a 3-mounth old daughter named Jupiter with his past girlfriend Maddie. His motiviation throughout the novel is to reunite with them.
Maddie Joyce is Joseph's past girlfriend and the mother of Jupiter. She comes from a wealthy family of lawyers and attended a prep school in Andover. She was thirteen years old when she met Joseph when he came to her house to assist his dad with plumbing. When she became pregnant she was sent away to a boarding school in Pennsylvania and was never to see Joseph again.
Mr. Brook is a former plumber and the father of Joseph Brook. He is a hot-headed outspoken man, with a history of abuse. He shows up multiple times during Josephs stay with the Hurds, fighting to take Joseph home with him.
Letter to Jupiter
Dear Jupiter,
I really do not know how to start this… I've written this at least 1000 times. I mean what is there to say to your daughter who’s never met you? Hi, I am your dad! Sorry, I am rambling, I will probably re-write this too. I just want you to know that I am trying everything. Everything in my power to find you. I know you probably won't be reading this until you're older. The best outcome is for you to be with me but I know that is not how life works. I just hope that one day we can finally meet. That is of course if you want to. I wish I could explain in words how much I love you already.
I guess I will start off with the story of what really happened, because I know that it will somehow get misinterpreted by whoever tells you about me. I will formally introduce myself. Hi Jupiter, my name is Joseph and I am your father. Your mother’s name is Maddie. We were in love. Of course we were only 14 but trust me I loved Maddie more than I loved myself. Everything was going great until one day your mother just disappeared. I walked to Maddies house every day no matter the weather and begged her parents to let me talk to her. They always gave the same answer, “no joseph. You need to stop coming to her and give up on Maddie”. Until one day, I found out Maddie was pregnant. I knew you were fine of course and honestly I was so excited! Maddie and I could start a life together without her parents getting in the way.
That was what I thought at least… My dad told me that we were not allowed to keep you. I was so mad. Furious. I always promised to fight for you. Then the worst day of my life happened. Maddie passed away during childbirth. I just know she loved you so much and would have done anything for you. That day I lost both of the loves of my life. You two were my only true family I was going to have. All that happened in the blink of an eye. Suddenly I lost you both.
There is so much more I wish I could write but all I really want you to know is that I will never stop loving you. I hope one day we can find each other because words cannot describe how hard I tried to get custody of you. Jupitor,I love you to the moon and back. I dream of one day becoming a real family.
