DeeDee Dawkins's Memories Still Live On
We are celebrating the memories of a great young sport-minded teen player named, Isis Denise (Dee Dee) Dawkins. Her Life impressed the heart and soul of the Ridgeview Recreation Council which was later changed to The One Purpose Parks and Recreation Council, and the Ridgeview community. The One Purpose Parks and Recreation Council is a non-profit organization that provides programs in the Ridgeview community for all ages. Dee Dee‘s mother, Barbara Dula-Saxton was a member of our council at the time of her daughter’s disappearance in 1992 and the Ridgeview Recreation Council at the time wanted to honor Barbara by naming our basketball league in memory of her daughter. The Dee Dee Dawkins Basketball League has been held at the Brown-Penn Recreation Center Almost every year since.
Dee Dee Dawkins was a vibrant young teen who loved sports. She was always around the Ridgeview Center playing sports with someone. Dee Dee played very well in several sports such as basketball, softball, and flag football in the
Ridgeview community. Teammates loved Dee Dee on their team because of her commitment to winning. But when the game was over, win or lose, they shook hands and continued to play in the Ridgeview Center with the other players.
We want this league and many other programs to continue in this community as long as the funds allow. Still, we need positive support and commitment from our youth, parents, the recreation council, the Hickory Parks and Recreation Department, and the city of Hickory.
Dee Dee disappeared on July 3, 1992, and her body was discovered days later in the Henry River, near the old Shuford Mills in Brookford, NC. The Catawba County sheriff's office investigated the murder, but as of today, no one has been officially charged.
