Opeyemi U. Lawal, MSc, PhD
Dr. Opeyemi Lawal is a molecular bioscientist and bioinformatician with over 15 years of research and teaching experience, specializing in microbial adaptation, environmental sustainability, and public health. He holds a bachelor’s degree (Hons) in microbiology from the University of Ado Ekiti, a master’s in environmental microbiology from the University of Ibadan, and a Ph.D. in molecular biosciences from ITQB-NOVA in Portugal, supported by prestigious international scholarships and fellowships. Dr. Lawal completed postdoctoral fellowship and teaching appointments at ITQB-NOVA and the University of Guelph. He is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the School of the Environment and a Researcher at Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER), University of Windsor, Canada.
Dr. Lawal employs a One Health approach in his research to address critical issues in food safety, water quality, and climate resilience using advanced molecular microbiology techniques, multi-omics, and bioinformatics, including AI/ML. An active scholar with several peer-reviewed publications and presentations at local and international scientific meetings, he is also engaged in public health, serving on Ontario's SARS-CoV-2 Wastewater Surveillance Initiative and consulting for the UN's Food and Agricultural Organization on food safety curriculum in the West African subcontinent. Additionally, Dr. Lawal co-founded Voices in STEM Nigeria, mentoring over 1,500 graduate applicants from underrepresented groups and providing training to empower emerging scientists in multi-omics and bioinformatics.
