The official memetic explanation offered by Archie Ransom for the mortar-fire destruction of Long Meg was that NATO troops were conducting a training exercise in the area around Brougham Castle, including a test of the missile alert system. Though everyone officially denies what happened, SANDMAN arranged leaks to the press and the locals that some Tommys got overexcited during the exercise and "shot up" one of the standing stones with live ammo. This accomplished two things: it symbolized Morgan le Fay's defeat at the hands of a modern Britain, in the tradition of St. George slaying the Dragon, and it allowed residents to simply cluck their tongues about soldiers blowing up dumb old rocks. Thereafter, SANDMAN archaeologists erected a near-replica Long Meg on the site of the original as a message to those who oppose the organization and its mission.
As a longer term project, Archie engineered one of his most potent memes to date: a full absurdist fictionalization of the Arthur legend, centering Arthur as the king who brought Christianity and order and reason – History A – to the British Isles while downplaying Morgan and her monstrous ilk –the Anunnaki and the Red Kings. So successful was this meme that the very notion of King Arthur would, over time, become a punchline, culminating in the comic masterpiece Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The only downside to this "Morgan le Fay does not exist" meme is that every nerd who sees the Monty Python film will, for the next several decades, feel compelled to quote it incessantly. But one can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.
