Three weeks ago, Opera submitted the iPhone version of its Opera Mini browser to Apple for approval, and I cheerfully predicted it would show up on the App Store within a couple of weeks. I was off by one week: Mini is now available as a free download.

Millions of people have been using this browser on their mobile devices. I've been running it for years as my general day-to-day browser on my computer using an emulator. This is generally all I use and basically only use the big browsers for media content like video streaming. I've packaged the java version as an sfs-addon (2MB). The package contains the emulator and the browser. It's already setup and ready to use.

How to use:

Load the sfs and run from menu. Menu entry should be in the Internet section. Click Start to open the browser. This is pre-setup so you may need to change the screen size. Easiest way to do this is to right-click the microemulator tab in your taskbar/tray and select to maximize, close the application and restart.

Notes:

Your keyboard and mouse should work as normal for most things like with any other browser however some notable differences: Use the Opera Mini virtual keyboard to type numerals and special characters; to delete typing errors/text use backspace; 8 for quick down scrolling; 2 for quick up scrolling, etc. It's a bit of a learning curve in the beginning but that makes it part of the fun. This is for general browsing, you can't play media. Opera ceased development of the Java version in 2018 (now focusing on Android version, etc.) but it still works well on the Java platform.

This is just a heads-up! While in the past I used an older Opera Mini on my pda, that wasĀ

when Opera Software ASA was an independent Norwegian company. Opera is NO LONGERĀ

independent, having been bought up by Qihoo 360, a Chinese owned company. The reasonĀ

I point this out, Opera Mini routes all traffic through Opera owned services to compress theĀ

data, supposedly saving you data on a limited plan. This is similar to the VPN, though theĀ

VPN is more for shielding you from snooping. Sounds good on paper, and when OperaĀ

was Norwegian owned I could trust them for privacy. I cannot trust the new Opera, I don'tĀ

support Opera browser any longer.

Each user should be informed prior to utilizing any Opera software in current environment.

The application is still developed and run by the original company that started it in Norway. Two Chinese companies own 80% of the shares. It's still a Norwegian app operating from Norway with millions of users around the world.

Uptodown is a multi-platform app store specialized in Android. Our goal is to provide free and open access to a large catalog of apps without restrictions, while providing a legal distribution platform accessible from any browser, and also through its official native app.

I'm trying to find the technology used in Opera Mini's browser. I can't find anything related to this, so I would like to know if anyone knows whether there exists a paper on this or if there is something else available to the public. I would like to create my own compression server based on the technology.

As of last year, a 1GB mobile data plan from Vodacom, the largest cellular service provider in Africa, was the equivalent of $28 US per month. In Sudan, where Opera Mini has one of its largest footholds at 56% of the mobile market, the minimum wage is 425 Sudanese Pounds per month or about $75 per month. Likely, these workers are not the ones who will purchase any sort of data plan, but this information can calibrate our expectations of even the relatively well-off in Sudan. A $28 data plan is a luxury few can afford.

It is better to block the opera mini application itself from being used. Opera mini may use its own port and encryption to contact opera servers to provide better browsing experience for end user. A use of app control/ ips signature ("HTTP.BROWSER_Opera.Mobile") can be used to control/block the traffic. Have ssl deep inspection enabled in the firewall policy and also allow only standard ports 80/443 for web traffic.

Opera Mini has different modes, which affect data consumption and also rendering. Each of the operating systems uses a version of Opera Mini with a different set of modes. Check out the full table at Opera Browsers, Modes & Engines.

Opera Mini on iOS phones have 2 additional modes, Normal and Turbo. Both these modes run on WebKit, as is expected for all browsers on iOS. The difference between them is that Turbo is a proxy browser, which works similarly to Mini mode except that the compression is much less aggressive, allowing websites to generally render as expected.

Opera Mini is a mobile browser developed by Opera for Android. Although it previously worked on iOS devices as well, the service has been discontinued as of 2019 so that Opera can focus on the new Opera Touch browser.

Now, Firefox and Avast are revered for their security systems, but Opera Mini still manages to edge past them on a few grounds. For example, while all three browsers offer free VPNs and ad blockers, Opera Mini is the only one that provides stable service even under a poor network connection.

There is an app, opera-mini, which will detect the Opera Mini browser. Opera mini operates by using a proxy server over SSL to retrieve all content. Enabling SSL decryption will break the connection so layer 7 inspection of this traffic is not possible. To block access just create a security policy with the opera-mini application and set the action to deny.

Palo Alto web filtering does not rely on any browser configuration. Instead you would need to place the firewall in the final path that the traffic must cross on the way to the internet. If the traffic crosses the firewall then a web filtering policy can be applied to the appropriate rule for the users.

When a web browser connects to any website, it sends what the browser is and version in the HTTP headers. You may be able to create a custom application which matches on that information and blocks it. You would want to test thoroughly but it may be possible.

Hype is the first African-inspired chat service built into a mobile browser, allowing users to easily set up an account and start chatting with secure end-to-end encryption right away. This means users can now browse the web, chat with friends, and share self-created memes, stickers and GIFs with other Hype users, all in one app.

Hype was built because younger generations of internet users are expecting more social connectivity from the apps they use on their devices. With this integration, Opera Mini becomes the first major browser in the world to integrate a social component that keeps users connected to the ones that matter the most. This unique and innovative blend is something that no other mobile browser in the Google Play Store offers.

To help familiarize people with the concept of an easy-to-use chatting service built into a browser and as a response to the high cost of data in Sub-Saharan Africa, Opera has partnered with the leading carriers in South Africa, Zambia and Ghana. Users of Opera Mini and CELL C in South Africa, MTN in Zambia and Vodafone or MTN in Ghana can activate the free data anytime by opening the Feedback Bot in Hype, sending "Unlock my free data" in chat, then clicking the link in the reply message. The free mobile data will be activated when the page is loaded.

Today, new generations are relying on formats like memes and stickers to express themselves. To make this easier, Hype includes WebSnap, a feature already known from the Opera desktop browser, allowing users to take snapshots from the web. Once a websnap is captured, users can edit it by adding colors, text and emojis, making it fun and entertaining before sharing with others. WebSnap also allows users to smoothly share the link of the original website from which they took their snaps, so users no longer need to switch between apps to share the content they want.

Hype is the first African inspired chat service built into a mobile browser. It offers its users a series of stickers created by African artists such as Musonda Kabwe from South Africa and Jonathan Agyei-Peprah from Ghana. The sticker packs have been designed to include everyday expressions currently popular in Sub-Saharan Africa. This unique offer from Hype stands out from other chat services and gives Africans the new ways of expressing themselves more accurately when using chat apps.

To activate the Hype account, users should have an Opera Mini application. Users set up a Hype account by tapping the Hype logo at the bottom of the Opera Mini browser, or through the O menu. Next they choose their name and take a selfie or upload a personalised photo, which will become their profile picture and will be visible for other Hype users. Once this process is completed, users sync Hype with their phone contact list to start chatting with others. 0852c4b9a8
