Introduction
Openstax Guide (“we,” “us,” or “the App”) is an independent, unofficial offline study companion. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App handles, how it is used, and your choices.
By using Openstax Guide, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of the App.
Unofficial App Notice
Openstax Guide is an unofficial information and study application. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or officially connected to OpenStax, Rice University, or any OpenStax brand, website, or trademark owner.
We do not claim to be the official OpenStax website or mobile product. We do not copy the OpenStax website design or brand identity as our own. Any references to OpenStax textbooks, titles, or educational topics are for descriptive, informational, and educational study purposes only. All trademarks and brand names remain the property of their respective owners.
Information We Process
Openstax Guide is designed as an offline-first app. Core reading and study features do not require creating an account or signing in.
Information typically stored on your device may include:
Reading progress, reading history, and completion status
Bookmarks, notes, highlights, and favorites
Quiz attempts, flashcard review status, and study preferences
App settings (for example theme, text size, daily study goal)
This study activity is stored locally in the App’s on-device database and preferences. We do not operate a required cloud account system for normal study use.
What We Do Not Do (Core Offline Use)
For core offline study use, Openstax Guide:
Does not require you to create an account
Does not sell your personal information
Does not use your notes or reading history to build advertising profiles for sale
Does not require the INTERNET permission for core reading and study tools in the current offline-first design
If you export or share a file (for example a user-data export), that action happens under your control on your device.
Advertising and Google AdMob
The current offline-first design of Openstax Guide is intended to work without network access for core study features.
If a version of the App displays advertisements through Google AdMob (or a similar advertising partner), advertising partners may collect and process certain device and usage-related data in accordance with their own policies, which may include advertising identifiers, approximate location derived from IP address (when network access is available), device information, and interaction with ads.
When ads are enabled:
Ads will comply with Google Play policies and Google AdMob program policies
Personalized advertising, where applicable, can typically be managed through your device or Google advertising settings
We will not knowingly use AdMob to target ads based on sensitive categories prohibited by Google policies
Children’s privacy rules still apply as described in this Policy and the Child Safety Standards section
If ads are not shown in your installed build, advertising partners do not receive data from this App for ad serving.
Google’s advertising and privacy information is available through Google’s official policies (including Google Privacy Policy and AdMob / Google Play advertising policies).
Permissions and Device Features
Depending on the version and features you use, the App may request only the permissions needed for functionality you choose (for example selecting a file to import or export). We do not request unnecessary permissions for core offline reading.
Children’s Privacy
Openstax Guide provides educational study materials and is intended as a general-audience learning tool. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children for the purpose of selling data, profiling, or behavioral advertising.
We do not require children to provide a name, email address, or account to use core offline study features. If a parent or guardian believes a child has provided personal information through a feature that involves sharing outside the device, please contact us using the developer contact on the Play listing so we can help address the request.
See also the in-app Child Safety Standards page.
Data Retention and Deletion
Local study data remains on your device until you clear it using in-app Data Management tools, uninstall the App, or otherwise remove app storage through your device settings. Uninstalling the App typically removes local App data unless your device backs it up separately.
Security
We design the App to keep study activity on-device. No method of electronic storage is perfectly secure. You are responsible for protecting physical access to your device and any exported files you create.
Third-Party Content and Links
Educational content, licenses, and attributions are described in Content & Attribution. Third-party names and textbook titles are used for identification and educational reference. Third-party websites or policies (including Google) are governed by those parties’ own terms and privacy practices.
International Users
The App stores information locally on your device. If you use the App while traveling, your data remains subject to the laws applicable to your device and jurisdiction.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect product, legal, or policy changes (including advertising updates). The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will change when we revise it. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised Policy.
