Maria’s Journey
Maria, a sex worker from Anambra West, faced numerous barriers to accessing healthcare and community support. Through Open Heart’s health outreach and empowerment workshops, Maria found a safe space, gained knowledge about her health rights, and learned financial skills that helped her achieve independence. Today, Maria leads peer support groups, mentoring others to seek healthcare and build confidence.
James’ Advocacy Impact
James, an LGBTQI+ youth in Bwari LGA, experienced discrimination that limited his access to vital health services. After participating in Open Heart’s advocacy training and community meetings, he became an active advocate for change. James’s advocacy efforts have contributed to the establishment of LGBTQI+ friendly clinics in his community, improving access to HIV testing and mental health services.
The Transformation of Local Health Services
With Open Heart’s support, local healthcare centers in Nigeria adopted inclusive practices, making their services more accessible to marginalized groups. Training programs for healthcare workers brought significant changes, enabling clinics to serve over 500 members of the LGBTQI+ community and women sex workers with dignity and respect.
