The Open Education Institute consists of two parts: 1) A guided training (Open Education Seminar) and 2) creation or adoption of open resources for a course (Open Content Implementation).
The full Institute will run once in fall 2020 and once in spring 2021. Specific dates can be found in the calendar, below this overview.
The open education seminar is a multi-unit training program on:
open educational resources and open pedagogy
copyright, fair use, and open licensing
finding and using openly-licensed resources
This seminar will help prepare you for adopting or expanding your use of open resources in your class(es). You will learn (or reinforce existing) skills to take on projects small and large, including incorporating open licensed photographs into course documents, adopting, adapting, or authoring an open textbook, compiling a reader of open-licensed journal articles, and finding or creating open ancillary resources.
Participants who complete the seminar will be encouraged at the start of the seminar to have in mind a course they would like to convert to one that uses exclusively open resources, or a course in which they already use open resources but are interested in enhancing those resources or creating or adopting additional resources. At the conclusion of the seminar, participants will be invited to create proposals for either of the aforementioned, which then segues into part II - implementation - of the open education institute.
Anticipated time commitment per week (for 8 weeks): 3 hours / week
Stipend for successful completion: $250
During this part of the open education institute, you will use the knowledge and connections gained in part I of the institute to find, adopt, adapt, or create open materials to replace existing paid materials in a course, or to enhance open materials you already use. Other than a required check-in during part II, there are no required meetings during this phase, in order to give you flexibility in designing a schedule that works for you to complete the tasks involved in your project, although participating in an ongoing series of informal meetings with your Part I cohort, called an "Open Project Workshop," will be offered as an option. You are encouraged to reach out to members of your cohort and your facilitator for questions and support whenever needed, though, of course!
