What is Open for Teachers?
Open for Teachers is a professional development program for teachers and school leaders to be sensitized and empowered about free and open education resources (OER) adaptable in the classroom; become part of a community of educators using these resources and access support for technology integration in the school.
Why Open for Teachers?
We have found out that there is a dearth of support for educators use of educational technology; professional development for schools are scarce and expensive and it is not a priority for most schools because of paucity of funds; and most schools (leaders and teachers) don't understand how to effectively and appropriately adopt technology in classroom. This program therefore assists schools to navigate the rocky route by mitigating the cost of technology adoption while still maintaining quality.
What would we learn?
Participants will learn the following:
Is it a one-off workshop?
This workshop is sequel to other additional activities which include:
Is it a hands-on workshop?
By design, this workshop is fully hands-on i.e. every participant will be actively involved in the learning process. Activities are embedded in every process of the workshop to stimulate understanding.
Who are the facilitators?
Facilitators include Creative Commons (Nigeria) experts, Google for Education Certified Innovators & Trainers, Microsoft Innovative Education Expert (MIEE), MERLOT Peer Reviewers.
Who are the target audience?
Open for Teachers targets teachers in the classroom and their school leaders in primary, secondary and technical schools. The order of participation is this: while school makes the reservation, 5 slots are given for teachers to attend the workshop.
What is the model of the workshop?
Open for Teachers seeks the most impact driven and sustainable pathway for schools to be sensitized and expand in the use of free and open education resource (OER) coupled with adopting technology effectively. Therefore, each school must nominate tech savvy teachers and/or at least those revered already by colleagues in school to be apt with technology. A blended (2 days online and 1 day face-2-face) workshop will be organized to initiate the teachers into the process. Afterwards, they will be required to cascade the training with other colleagues in their school. Based on their knowledge of the systems in their respective schools, they will be required to design a template for technology adoption which will be reviewed by expert facilitators. This will then be taken back to the school leaders for alignment and implementation.
Who pays for Open for Teachers?
In order to achieve the desired goal, the initiative seeks the most cost effective pathway to get schools sensitized and empowered. We try to work with funding partners and individuals to keep the workshop facilitation FREE. As much as possible, schools may only be required to pay reservation fee to register for the whole package.
How are the teachers selected?
As it is, a school leader or designee will respond to the call and nominate 5 tech savvy teachers for the workshop. We leave the choice to the schools because of the support stage of the program. Therefore, interested teachers should convey this this to their school leaders,
