Use Ignition as an OPC UA client to the OPC UA Server embedded in the PLC, as indicated in OPC UA Client Connection Settings - Ignition User Manual 8.1 - Ignition Documentation. Will I have access (read and write) to all the tags published in the PLCs OPC UA Server easily? Are there any disadvantages or special considerations I am missing?

I have implemented a server interface because the PLC is acting as an OPC UA server, and it is the way to expose the tags to be accessed by clients. It is the only way I know to share tags when PLC is acting as an OPC UA server.

My bad, I've seen now that you're working on a S7-1200 that requires a Server Interface defined. On S7-1500 there's no need at first as you can enable the Generic Siemens Interface (that's what I was referring to).

I'm more familiar with 1500 family thus I'm not aware if there are some incompatibilities with OPC on 1200 platform.

As testing purpose, have you tried to access to the same NodeId with another client, eg UAExpert?

After a certain time I can't ping the client from outside anymore and I can't remote connect to it. When I look at the MAC address table I can't see the client's mac address anymore (but I can still see the MAC and IP address via sh ip arp command). After I ping the client from the switch it's possible to ping the client from outside too and to connect remote.

I see this exact behaviour all the time. This is not a network issue but a fault with the NIC drivers (bad code).

So what happens is the client "stops talking" and the switch, naturally, drops the ARP details after some time.

The configuration of S7 1500 as a Modbus Client device is different as a Server. Firstly, Navigate to Communication then select the Modbus TCP client block from the Others dropdown. It will prompt you to create a DB select ok.

Compile the program. Download the program into the PLCSIM Advanced simulator. Start monitoring your program and modify your parameters MB_DATA _ADDR and MB_DATA Len as shown below. The DATA ADDR 40001 indicates the first holding register number as the starting point. MB_Mode 0 means the Modbus client is currently reading data from the server.
