BWK10103: Physical Chemistry Individual Assignment
A steam turbine car is an automobile that is powered by a steam turbine instead of a traditional internal combustion engine or electric motor. The objective of this project is to design and construct THREE (3) functional steam-powered car model utilizing a soft drink can as the boiler. This project aims to demonstrate the principles of thermodynamics and energy conversion in the context of physical chemistry.
This project was all about building a small steam-powered car using a homemade turbine system. I tried using a soft drink can as the steam boiler, a basketball needle as the nozzle, and even added two flames to heat it up and create pressure.
Throughout the weeks, I made many changes and tested different ideas to try to get the turbine spinning. Even though it didn’t work in the end, I still learned a lot. Some of the things I learned include:
How steam pressure works
How different materials affect heat and pressure
How small changes in design can make a big difference
That failing is part of learning and improving
Even though the turbine didn’t move, I’m proud of what I tried and how much I’ve learned. If I get the chance in the future, I’d love to try again with better tools and more time. This project really helped me understand more about how steam engines work and how to keep going even when things don’t go as planned.
