Education on the Margins
"Nothing about us, without us"
Mission of the project
Welcome to On the Margins
On the Margins is a platform dedicated to exploring education in its most transformative and inclusive forms. Anchored by our podcast and annual conferences, we focus on empathy-driven pedagogies and the critical importance of educating those often overlooked by traditional systems.
Our podcast features insightful conversations with educators, researchers, and practitioners who work in settings where individuals are marginalized. Through these discussions, we aim to shine a light on innovative approaches to education that foster understanding, inclusion, and social change.
The Transformative Narratives conference, launched last year, centered on empathy-building practices such as Story Exchange and Restorative Practice. This year’s conference will build on that foundation, delving deeper into the challenges and opportunities of educating those on the margins of society. We are also excited to announce plans to launch an electronic academic journal at this year’s event, providing a dedicated space for scholarship in this vital area.
Whether you are an educator, a student, or simply passionate about creating a more equitable world, On the Margins invites you to join the conversation and be part of this growing community committed to transforming education for all.
On the Margins Podcast
"Education on the Margins" is a podcast series dedicated to exploring the diverse and often overlooked aspects of the education system that serve individuals on the fringes of mainstream education. This podcast will delve into non-linear education pathways, for example Youthreach, prison education, further education institutions, the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA), and other relevant organizations. By bringing to light the unique challenges and triumphs within these educational settings, the podcast aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the innovative approaches being taken to educate and empower marginalized populations.
Conference: Transformative Narratives, On the Margins
Last year’s conference focused on empathy building pedagogies such as Story Exchange and Restorative Practice. This year we want to focus on put more of a focus on Educational Disadvantage so we are keeping the general theme about narrative and how being informed about where your students are coming from and their lived experience can influence your interactions and interpersonal relationships within the classroom. The conference is aimed at the whole spectrum of educators whether they work in Primary, Post Primary, Youthreach, Prisons or other non traditional sites of education that might be judged "On the Margins" of society.
