Flying: The closest airport is the Kitchener airport (YKF), but there are limited flights. The closest major airport is Toronto Pearson (YYZ). However, there is a plot twist! Air Canada has a bus service from YYZ to YKF, which can be booked as a connecting flight. Rumour has it that the bus is rather nice.
From the Kitchener airport, you can get to Waterloo by public transport, a taxi, or your favourite transport app (see below).
From Pearson airport, City Cabs and Waterloo Taxi both have prepaid taxi services connecting Waterloo and Pearson airport. Alternatively, you can take the UP express to Union Station, and then take a GO train to Kitchener. Or you can just take GO transit for the whole trip. It's a choose-your-own adventure!
Train: There is a VIA train station in Kitchener. If you are passing through Union Station in Toronto, it is almost certainly more convenient and cheaper for you to take a VIA train to Union Station, and then take a GO train to Kitchener.
Driving: Not much to say here. There are roads. You can drive.
Walk: If you're reading this page, it's probably a really long walk from where you live. But hey, each to their own.
Coordinate: If you would like to coordinate your travel with other attendees, you can do so through a shared spreadsheet (the link has been emailed to all registered participants).
Transit: The public transport system is called Grand River Transit. All the schedules are integrated with google maps.
Walk: The city is geographically small and very walk-able. It's even more bike-able if you have your bike with you!
Taxi: The local taxi companies are City Cabs and Waterloo Taxi. The former uses an app called ICABBI, the latter has one called Lokal.
Ride sharing: Uber and Lyft are available, as well as a whole host of local companies like RideON (founded in Waterloo!).
Drive: There are roads. See below for parking information.
There are many parking lots on campus, some are designated for visitors, some are available for visitors after 4:30pm and on weekends. More information can be found on the parking website.
On the University of Waterloo campus, United College (one of the student residences) has a block of hotel rooms.Â
Here is a helpful list of hotels near the University of Waterloo.
The Delta hotel is pricier, but the nearest one and the usual place visitors to the University stay.
The block of hotels up near St Jacob's Farmers' Market is about 5km away from Campus, but has the advantage of being at the market, which is open on Saturday (early enough to go to before the conference)! The market is probably the major tourist attraction in Waterloo.
An option not on the previous list is (are?) the Laundry Rooms.
AirBnB is also available in the city.
If you would like to find a roommate, you can do so through a shared spreadsheet whose link has been emailed to all registered participants.
