The California Virtual Campus - Online Education Initiative (CVC-OEI) is supported by the California Community College Chancellor's Office (CCCCO). The CVC-OEI Course Design Rubric contains the online course design standards developed and adopted by the CVC-OEI. The rubric is intended to establish standards relating to course design, interaction and collaboration, assessment, learner support, and accessibility in order to ensure the provision of a high-quality learning environment that promotes student success and conforms to existing regulations.
In the development of these standards, the CVC-OEI team was fortunate to have access to significant work already undertaken in this area by the Online Network of Educators (@ONE), the California Community College Distance Education Coordinator’s group (CCC DECO), the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC), and the CCCCO along with a variety of other local college and nationally established standards.

In 2019, Compton College became the 57th California community college to join the CVC-OEI Consortium and our Academic Senate subsequently adopted the CVC-OEI Rubric as our standard of online course design. As part of our Institutional Effectiveness Partnership Initiative (IEPI), we held our first Digital Summit to discuss strategies to improve the online experience for our students and faculty.
The top three reasons to align your course to the CVC-OEI Rubric are that:
Student feedback has significantly shown that courses aligned to the rubric provide better guidance, ease of use, and a higher success rate than those that are not aligned
Courses that are rubric aligned allow a more streamlined approach for faculty teaching the course in terms of ease of grading, providing instruction to students and are less labor intensive.
Course that are aligned to the rubric are published on the CVC-OEI Finish Faster website allowing students across the state of California to search and register for community college online courses enabling them to help finish there educational goals faster.

The CVC-OEI Rubric is broken up into the following sections. Please click each link to watch a video about aligning your course material to the corresponding section of the rubric.
Section D of the CVC-OEI Rubric has been interwoven into the other sections of the rubric since it pertains to creating accessible course content.
For additional tools and tips on aligning section D please view this Google Site on aligning Section D.
Aligning Section D in Canvas (adoptable course)
Course Design Resources is a free Canvas course that assists faculty with aligning your course design to the OEI Rubric.
Faculty can download the CVC-OEI Course Review Prep Form which will walk you through the rubric self check
Faculty can also fill out Compton College's Google Form for POCR Submission. This will notify the Faculty Course Review Committee that you are ready to go through our local Peer Online Course Review Process.
Great Question!
You would contact the Faculty Course Review Committee by emailing the Faculty Instructional Designer at jphillips@compton.edu and letting us know that you are interested in going through the OEI Rubric Course Review Process.
The first step is understanding the rubric sections by watching the videos and going through the Canvas Course Design Resources above under section 3.
Then you would complete the self-assessment to see where you can work on to improve your course under section 4.
Then you will be able to work with your Lead Faculty Reviewer and your Faculty Instructional Designer to ensure that your course is ready for review!
