COMPLETED PHOTONICS COURSE

Optics & Photonics (From basic to advanced Electromagnetism)

Theory, Simulation & Research

Objective: To prepare the participants for higher study and research in optics/ photonics/ electromagnetism.

One can give a look to Dr. Mahdy's optics/ photonics/electromagnetism research group: https://sites.google.com/view/nsuopticslab/members

Course Syllabus:

A. Theory learning Part:

a) 1st four classes- Basic optics/Electromagnetism & vector calculus (Physical meaning of the fundamental equations of vector calculus and optics/ Electromagnetics including Maxwell's equations, Different wave equations & their connection with photon/quantum theory, Property of obliquely incident light in continuous medium & in the boundaries). The upcoming book of Mahdy sir will also cover most of the topics.

b) one or two classes- Plasmonics, surface plasmons, Optical/photonic/ microwave ranged waveguides, Fano Resonance and cavities ; then sir will discuss his 2 journals of metamaterial based optical fibers.

c) One or two classes- Scattering theories of Mie and Rayleigh objects (very very important for photonics people) and the detailed theory of light energy, momentum and optical forces. Then sir will discuss shortly about his recent several journals of optical force & photon momentum.

d) One or two classes- Basic antenna theories (Hertzian dipole, half wavelength antenna etc, antenna arrays and different types of radiations) and Microstrip patch antenna. Then sir will discuss shortly about his 5 journals of metamaterial based antennas.

e) If we get time- quantum theory of light (a fascinating topic).

B. Simulation learning Part: From class 10 to 13 [or during the class : 8 to 11 (up to your decision)]

**** Two different full wave simulation software will be taught (foreign professors prefer such qualifications from the students for their research)-

(i) COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS (ii) LUMERICAL FDTD

- 2D, 3D and other complex simulations will be taught to make you a master of simulation. After those four classes, we believe that anyone will be able to add in CV that they know how to simulate with two different software. For simulation, we will focus some examples from sir’s PhD thesis (eight high impact factor journals [on optical force and photon momentum] have already been published from this thesis):

C. One session (not a full class) : How to write a decent version of journal article targeting high impact factor journals.

  • The upcoming book of Mahdy sir will also cover most of the topics of 1st four or five classes. .
