Course Designer Packet

The following forms and guides were developed to help course designers proceed in an orderly manner and to lay out the steps they need to take in preparing a course. Some of these documents are just for the designer's information or are tools to help in the development of a course. Documents marked with a red ribbon in the upper left corner, however, must be filled out and submitted to the Director of Online Education.

This diagram shows the phases and steps in the course design, development, and deployment process.

This document lists all the deliverables that course designers must submit to the Director of Online Education. Copy the file as a Word document to your computer then fill out the approximate dates when you expect to complete each item in the column titled "DEADLINES." This is an approximation. If you miss a deadline, it's no big deal. We all understand that an educator's plans can run into roadblocks. But at least this will give the Dir. of Online Education an idea of when to expect your submissions. It should also help you to stay on track with the development of your course.

This form explains what is expected of a course designer. It must be signed by the designer and the Academic Dean or Director of Online Education before work can begin on a new course.

Student Learning Objectives are clear and concise statements of what observable activities students should be able to do as a result of completing your course. This document provides guidance for creating robust SLOs that can guide the development of your course.

This is a very helpful chart of Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives. Use it -- together with the Learning Objectives Worksheet -- to you formulate your Student Learning Objectives for the syllabus.

The choice of course textbook is related to several of the quality standards used to evaluate our online courses. This form helps us ensure that our courses fulfill those standards.

This template is the first step in course design. Please fill this out and get it to the Director of Online Education as soon as possible.

This document shows a recommended outline of an online course. Please use this example as a base from which to develop your course.

This document states the policy, definitions, procedures, and guidelines for calculating the workload in hours per week that is required of students to complete an online course. You will need to refer to this document as you fill out the Student Workload Verification Worksheet.

This is the worksheet course designers should use to calculate estimated student workload. This form must be filled out and submitted to the Director of Online Education. It will need to be reviewed and approved by the Academic Dean or the Director of Online Education before the course can be taught. Refer to the Student Workload Policy for instructions on how to estimate student workload.

A course syllabus should provide detailed explanations for each assignment students are required to complete. This example provides a model for preparing these sections of your syllabus.

This is the official template of the college for all online courses. Red text signifies instructions for the course designer or instructor. Read these instructions carefully as you create your syllabus. Once the syllabus is completed, delete all red text before uploading it to Populi. The syllabus should be approved by the Director of Online Education before being uploaded to Populi.

This document lists the criteria that is used by the Peer Review Team to evaluate all new online courses created for MSCC. The document also contains explanations of how each criterion can be fulfilled.

The second Quality Standards criterion states: "Students are introduced to the purpose and structure of the course." It has been determined that one way to accomplish this is to provide students with a weekly (or modular if you divide your course into modules rather than weeks) overview of the activities for the week. This document explains how these overviews should be organized and what they should include.
