You don’t need to be a professional graphic designer to make a creative thumbnail. In fact, you can use Canva and pick a pre-made template and use that. So the creative portion of making a thumbnail does not need to be difficult.
What can get tricky is to make sure the images you select are all lighted the same way. You might need some image editing software to make all of your thumbnail images look the same. You can use PicMonkey to edit your thumbnail images so they all look similar or you can use Photoshop or even VSCO on your mobile device.
Another trick to ensure your thumbnail images all look the same is to actually take a picture versus using a screen shot from your video. A photo will be more crisp overall and also higher res so you can manipulate the image better.
Secondly, if you use text on your image (and you should, but we will discuss that later) make sure you use the same color scheme and consistent fonts.
