Tally counters (sometimes called click counters) are used to count things. The physical version is a small handheld device with a mechanical button that increments a count when pressed. They are used for simple counting tasks, such as keeping track of the number of attendees at an event or the number of items in a inventory.

Keepthescore.com is one of the leading solutions for creating online counters. It has all of the advantages listed above and is especially suited for multi-person use. Your counts are stored safely in the cloud and the data is always automatically synchronized.

Hello! I work in a bank and have been trying to find a device to keep a count of how much rolled coin I have. I started looking into making my own solution, and stumbled on some e-ink displays. So here's what I'm looking to do:

Is it possible to have something like this either turn off or go into some sleep mode until a button is pressed? I'd like to power it off a 9v if possible, and draw as little power as possible. I have a spare Uno R3, but I'm thinking something like a Nano might be better since it needs less current.

Yes, the project sounds totally possible. I'd recommend starting simple and get your display working with the arduino powered through your USB or wall plug. Then worry about having the buttons work and updating the display. Then worry about putting your arduino to sleep to save power and getting it to wake up properly with a button press.

How would I do something like 'putting it to sleep' and 'waking it up'? I should be able to use online guides to get the screen going and get buttons wired up, but that sounds like something a lot more complex

a 9v battery running a LCD display won't last long, far better to look at a couple of LiPo's or similar in a small battery clip. 9v Cells are great for low load constant supply (think smoke detectors) but they chew out very quickly in this type of project.

A tally counter is a mechanical, electronic, or software device used to incrementally count something, typically fleeting. One of the most common things tally counters are used for is counting people, animals, or things that are quickly coming and going from some location.

A tally counter is usually made of metal and is circular in shape. Part of the circle is flattened out and contains a piece of clear plastic. Inside the counter are a number of rings with the numbers from 0 to 9 in descending order going clockwise. Most counters have four such rings, allowing the user to count up to 9999. A metal ring may be attached to aid in holding the counter, and usually half the ring is bent to fit flush with the counter.

The counter is activated by pressing a button located above the screen. This will cause the first ring to advance one number. When the count has reached 0009, then the second ring will be advanced one click and the first ring will come back to zero. To reset the counter, a knob is located on the side. This knob turns all the rings which are displaying the same number (usually zero). When the number displayed reaches the number on the remaining rings, then they will turn too, until the display is reset back to 0000.

Electronic tally counters are available, which use an LCD screen to display the count, and a button to advance the count. Some also have a button to decrement the count, for example if a mistake is made, or if counting a majority.
