Keeping Things in Storage in Good Condition

Whenever I want to put something away in storage for a good while and I’m unsure of when I’ll use it again, I try my best to take the time to pay extra attention to my storage set up and how I’m packaging it up. If you weren’t aware of this, proper packaging can extend the life of clothes, electronics, and even things like books for a lot longer than if you had haphazardly stored it all in a box.

In fact, I’ve been keen on always properly packaging my Magic the Gathering cards (basically cardboard playing cards) when I put them away in storage for an indefinite amount of time. With the right shipping supplies and the right attention to detail, you can practically keep cards like this in mint condition for as long as you live. Use packing tape on your cardboard boxes

I can’t stress enough how useful it is to properly seal your boxes when storing cards or CDs or whatever else for a long period of time. The more you keep your belongings stored away from the elements and the air, the longer they will stay in good condition. It’s when they’re exposed to humidity and air that they can become damaged or aged.

Store in cool, dry places.

While cool places usually equates to your basement, you have to be careful when doing this because of the risk of flooding. Nonetheless, if you place your boxes full of things higher up in your basement, this is the best you can do location wise.

Use high quality materials

Don’t skimp on the office and shipping supplies you’ll need for storing your valuables away for a long period of time. The higher quality materials and supplies you have, the longer your items will stay in great condition. If they’re valuable in the first place, why would you want to be cheap for the materials in charge of keeping their value high?

Use item specific protective cases

Whether you have vinyl records put away in storage or playing cards like me, protective plastic cases that can ward away pretty much all harmful factors towards your materials is the best bet when it comes to storing your things. Not all hobbies or valuables or clothes have something like this, but if you can have something that wards off the elements in the best way possible, you’ll feel less worried about also having them in cardboard boxes.
