Variations provides online access to selected recordings and scores from the Indiana University Cook Music Library for use by IU Bloomington students, faculty, and staff. The entire collection is accessible from computers in the Music Library. Outside the Music Library, access is limited to music faculty and to students currently enrolled in a class for which Variations is used.

This is a list of online digital musical document libraries. Each source listed below offers access to collections of digitized music documents (typically originating from printed or manuscript musical sources). They may contain scanned images, fully encoded scores, or encodings designed for music playback (e.g., via MIDI). Some (e.g., KernScores) are adapted for music analysis.

The Metadata Mapping Tool is part of a suite of tools that will allow museums, archives, libraries and other cultural heritage organizations to make their locally stored sheet music records available for online searching on the Sheet Music Consortium portal. With this tool Sheet music collection managers can map their sheet music records into MODS (Metadata Object Description Schema), DC (Dublin Core) and QDC (Qualified Dublin Core) to create OAI-compliant XML records. The tool will upload data from a variety of source formats (e.g. text or Excel spreadsheet files), walk the user through a process to map data from their locally defined metadata to a standard schema (MODS, DC, QDC), and output an XML file that is compliant with the Open Archives Initiative standard for a Static Repository. That Static Repository can then be harvested by the Consortium metadata harvester for inclusion in the Sheet Music Consortium Web site.

IMSLP / Petrucci Music Library is an online library of musical scores. IMSLP stands for International Music Score Library Project and started on February 16, 2006. It is a project for the creation of a virtual library of public domain music scores based on the wiki principle; it is also more than that. Users can exchange musical ideas through the site, submit their own compositions, or listen to other people's composition; this makes IMSLP an ever-growing musical community of music lovers for music lovers. For more information about IMSLP, see here.

Despite changes in how Americans are listening to music, think Pandora or Spotify, people are still checking out physical CDs from libraries. A recent PEW report found that half of Americans visited a library last year, and 16 percent of them checked out music.

"We were originally going to make it just available for library card holders," said Nashville Public Librarian Jared Brennan. "We're still curating a Nashville music culture and as a permanent online streamable and downloadable archive... but also making it available for the world-at-large."

Werner Icking Music Archive

This site has many free sheet music files. While many are in PDF format only, an increasing number are in MusicXML format or MusicXML-compatible source formats like Finale and capella. The Archive has since merged with IMSLP, but this original site is still available online.

The Josquin Research Project

This open-access site allows users to search, browse, and analyze complete scores of polyphonic music from roughly 1420 to 1520. The project started to support comparative analysis of the works attributed to the composer Josquin des Prez. It then expanded to support a larger range of musicological questions about Renaissance music and now includes over 700 works. 2351a5e196
