Mindset is always there in the background, yet few ever truly understand what mindset is, and more importantly how to use their mindset to get the results they actually want in life.
Understanding your mindset is the key to achieving success.
Mindset is a collection of various things:
Values
Beliefs
Opinions
Thoughts
Experiences
Learning
This is something of a simplification, there is much more to it than this, certainly if you follow the neuro linguistic programming model, which brings in how the mind then reshapes how information is processed in order to match the perceived view of the world. Something which can cause various issues for people with a negative view of the world, i.e. a negative mindset.
For people with a positive mindset, life yields far fewer challenges, with those that do come usually being taken as opportunities for personal growth and development.
The mindset handles information in three fundamental ways before people become consciously aware of what is going on around them:
Deletion - the mind deletes information it believes would be superfluous or irrelevant
Generalization - the mind generalizes information for which detail is not needed
Distortion - the mind distorts information to bring it in line with world expectations
All of which happens in the blink of an eye.
Alongside all this, it also filters according to your values and beliefs, weighing things according to their perceived importance and criticality to you.
For example, you rarely need to be aware of the feel of the socks on your feet as you go through the day, though knowing there is a car coming at you fast from beside you is something important to your safety. Likewise, much advertising gets tuned out, unless you are looking for a specific product or service, in which case such things do get noticed.
Again, this all happens in the blink of an eye. The mindset processes information with incredible speed. As a mark of this, you have around 2,000,000 bits of information a second coming in through your various senses, yet you are only ever consciously aware of around 134 bits of information per second. A massive amount is going on in the background that you are usually blissfully unaware of. Your mind just carries the load for you.
Your mindset is a powerful thing, so understanding how to get the best from it, is important for anyone wanting to create success in anything.
Getting the best from your mindset involves knowing how your mindset works, and how to reprogram it in order to have it work efficiently in a way that will be most beneficial to you.
Much of this comes from being able to shift focus, and concentrate on what's most important.
Though the bigger change, and most vital, comes from letting go of limiting beliefs, old negative emotions, and aligning yourself with desired outcomes in a way which is empowering.
A positive mindset has to be developed around the belief of achievement of the desired outcome.
One astoundingly simple concept which was brought to the fore by Carol S. Dweck was the concept of the growth mindset and the fixed mindset.
With a growth mindset the person is open to change, and understands that they can improve their results through learning and practice.
A fixed mindset brings beliefs that things are set in stone, the world is as it is, and nothing will ever change. Alongside this, there is no room for improvement, as they are as good as they will ever be.
What then came after the sharing of this concept was the realization of things like the false growth mindset, and the truer growth mindset. Essentially the simple model never really holds, so grouping people, or even just defining individuals as having either a growth mindset or fixed mindset becomes impossible.
While there is some wisdom within the outline groups of fixed and growth mindsets, the labels serve little benefit to anyone, as the differences within mindsets are deeper and more diverse.
The new psychology of success is in reality, nothing new.
Everything that has ever been required in order to create success, is still the same. Nothing has changed on a psychological level, the only thing new has been the understanding some people have about the function of mindset, and how it influences external events.
If you delve back through history though, there have always been the mysteries which were studied, and roots to self mastery. Those same processes still work in creating success through mindset now, as they did thousands of years ago.
What has altered is the flow of information which enables learning and the ability of those inclined to work with their mindset, to do so more efficiently. Rather than having to go to a specific master or guru, information and learning can be obtained online, from wherever, enabling more efficient usage of time and energy.
While there are some new processes, neuro linguistic programming being one set, everything regarding mindset and success has roots in discoveries made thousands of years ago. The Egyptians and Hawaiians had very good understanding of things that few do in this current age.
Understanding your own mindset requires a lot of non-judgmental self reflection.
Without quality training, or coaching, it is very challenging for most people to get sufficient deep of understanding with their own mindsets, in order to enact real quality understanding or change.
For those that do wish to delve within themselves and seize the challenge, meditation is a great place to begin, along with practicing mindfulness, i.e. non-judgment.
For those wanting to really get the best, then getting onto good neuro linguistic programming courses is wise, as the techniques learned open up the way for deeper reflection and deeper understanding, in far shorter periods of time. What can take years of reflection to bring a faint understanding, can be achieved with greater certainty in a matter of minutes with the right NLP techniques.
One key NLP techniques that's priceless in terms of bringing deep understanding of situations in mere minutes, is that of values elicitation. It enables understanding of how fulfilment is gained, what is important with that area of life, what gaps exist at present, how upfront inspiration comes, plus it can yield vital information on why any problems or challenges exist with that part of life.
All of these things require discipline and focus, without those two things, regardless of what other techniques are being used, little worthwhile understanding will manifest.
Developing the right mindset comes partly from understanding, though more from change.
While things like affirmations can be used to influence focus, and help yourself flow in a certain direction, they are very slow working and require daily usage at regular times.
Goal setting has also been cited as being good for helping create success. Though when there are limiting beliefs holding your back, goals can end up creating more frustration, unless the decision is made to get professional help in the form of coaching to hone the mindset.
Mindset coaching, for which NLP coaching is especially good, is the best way to actually ensure that a person's mindset is properly aligned for the success they desire. By going within, letting go of limiting beliefs, old negative emotions, and negative thinking. Then installing empowering, positive beliefs that support success, along with fresh habits that support the achievement of the desired outcome, success flows with far greater ease.
There are a lot of great reasons to get coaching, and many benefits from having online coaching, though the greatest reason to keep in mind is how mindset change can be brought about with rapid, yet deep lasting effect.
When you are seriously considering getting coaching to help develop your mindset, so that you can achieve success easily, find the right coach for you. Talk with coaches, feel what it is like working with them, and gain an understanding of how they can help you with your mindset, and gauge whether they will be right for you. It can take talking to a few coaches, it could also be the first one you meet with.
Because mindset matters to everything in life, work with someone that you have complete faith in. Doing so helps you create vital mindset change more easily, it also helps you to make the best changes possible. Proof of past results can be unreliable, everyone interacts differently. Hence why talking with them, and ideally experiencing mindset shift with them for yourself is so important.
How easily you can develop your mindset for success is very much dependent on your level of commitment to change. When it is being done casually, here and there, with little investment, little happens. When people really commit to getting the best from their mindset, investing in themselves, with coaching and training, then the miraculous often happens.
