Everything You Need to Know About Post-Graduation Work Permit

So, you have completed your post-secondary graduation from a reputed university in Canada and now looking for career opportunities here. Good news awaits you. You will have several work opportunities in various niches all over Canada even if you are still studying. A PGWP or Post-Graduation Work Permit is what you need to work while acquiring your Ph.D.

What is the PGWP all about?

The PGWP is an effort by the Canadian Government to attract and retain international students. It lets you work for any employer anywhere in Canada without needing a job offer. It is usually valid for three years though the actual length may differ depending on your existing educational program.

PGWP holders usually want to apply for Canadian immigration in the future. In that case, you need at least a year of professional work experience to be eligible for the PR program.

What are the eligibility criteria?

Here are the selection criteria international students need to meet to be eligible for the PGWP:

The selection criteria may change keeping the benefits of Canada and students in mind. Thus, it is better to have a word with immigration consultants so you are updated on what’s required to get through the process successfully.

How long is it valid?

The validity differs based on the DLI you are pursuing your program from. For instance, if you have completed your program in less than eight months, then you will not be eligible for a PGWP. If you have completed a program between eight months and two years, then your PGWP will be valid for the same length as your program.

You should apply for the PGWP within 180 days of getting your official letter and transcriptions. And remember, these are the first two most important documents you need to present to the program officers.
