In this lecture, we will dive into the essential concepts of triage and prioritization in healthcare settings, focusing on how to assess and manage patients based on the urgency of their condition. Effective triage ensures that the most critical patients receive care first, helping to improve patient outcomes and optimize resources, especially in high-pressure situations like emergency rooms or disaster response.

In this session, students will learn about the significance of health screenings in preventive healthcare. Topics will include common screening tests, age and risk factor-based guidelines, and how screenings contribute to early diagnosis and better long-term health outcomes. The lecture will also cover best practices for educating patients on the importance of regular screenings.
LECTURER: SIR NIÑO ROMAN SAYSON SUBJECT: NURSING DXNP
In this session, you’ll gain hands-on knowledge of how to assess and interpret vital signs as a foundational aspect of nursing practice. Topics will include the physiological processes behind vital signs, common variations across different age groups, and how vital sign changes correlate with clinical conditions. The session will equip you with the skills to accurately monitor and respond to changes in patients' vital signs.

In this session, students will learn the step-by-step process for performing a physical assessment. They will explore various assessment techniques for evaluating the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and musculoskeletal systems. The session will also highlight how physical assessment findings guide clinical decision-making and the development of individualized care plans.

Specimen collection involves obtaining samples of bodily fluids or tissues for laboratory testing to diagnose or monitor health conditions. Common types of specimens include blood, urine, stool, sputum, throat swabs, and tissue biopsies, each collected using specific methods like venipuncture, swabbing, or aspiration. Proper handling, labeling, and transport are crucial to maintain sample integrity and ensure accurate results.

Laboratory data normal values are reference ranges used to interpret test results and assess a person's health. Common normal values include a white blood cell count of 4,500–11,000 cells/µL, glucose levels of 70–99 mg/dL (fasting), and total cholesterol under 200 mg/dL. For liver function, ALT and AST levels should be 7–56 U/L and 10–40 U/L, respectively. Sodium levels typically range from 135–145 mEq/L, and for lipid profiles, LDL cholesterol should be below 100 mg/dL while HDL is ideally 40–60 mg/dL for men and 50–60 mg/dL for women. These values help healthcare providers evaluate health conditions and diagnose potential issues.

Diagnostic tests are essential tools used by healthcare providers to identify diseases, conditions, or infections. Common tests include blood tests to assess overall health and detect conditions like diabetes or anemia, imaging tests like X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans that help visualize internal organs and identify issues such as fractures or tumors, and urine tests to monitor kidney function or detect infections.
LECTURER: SIR NIÑO ROMAN SAYSON SUBJECT: NURSING DXNP
In addition to common tests, several other diagnostic procedures are essential for identifying specific health issues. Allergy tests can be performed via blood tests or skin prick tests to detect sensitivities to substances like pollen, food, or medications. Endoscopy is a procedure that uses a flexible tube with a camera to examine the digestive tract, lungs, or other internal organs, helping diagnose conditions like ulcers or cancers.

There are various diagnostic tests used to identify and monitor health conditions. Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) assess lung health and are used to diagnose conditions like asthma or COPD. The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test measures PSA levels to screen for prostate cancer. Colonoscopy is an imaging procedure used to examine the colon for signs of colorectal cancer or other gastrointestinal issues. A skin biopsy can help diagnose skin cancer or infections. Rapid antigen tests detect pathogens like viruses by identifying proteins on their surface, providing quick results.
