Hi all datahoarders! I'd like to get my hands on an offline installer of OneNote 2016 since it isn't included in my Office 2019 installer. It's possible to get an offline installer of Office 2019 (Word, Excel and Powerpoint) from Microsoft with my license, but OneNote is a separate download from Microsoft's webpage as it's not included in 2019, but was in 2016. An Office 2019 license still activates OneNote 2016 legally. Unfortunately, this installer is NOT an offline installer and requires being online to download and install. Does anyone know of an offline installer for OneNote 2016? Or is it possible to create an offline installer with Microsoft's Click-to-run installers?

I've twice tried to download the latest standalone version of OneNote, direct from Microsoft. All the links I found let to downloading and installer called OfficeSetup. The first time it was clearly downloading way more than the mere 150 meg or so needed, so I aborted that one, thinking I must somehow have gotten the wrong link. Tried again, same result. I had to run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant to uninstall all the office components left over.

Edit: Yes, I've seen the posts saying that the OfficeSetup installer will not download anything but OneNote. That is total bull$%! because after running it, I had to uninstall a few other new garbage bits, like Teams, that I guarantee were not there before. And seriously: why would MS need to download hundreds and hundreds of megabytes to install a 150 megabyte program? Please.

Paid non-commercial version which is relatively cheap, should be able to record audio/video and work standalone, without the OneDrive storage. So if you say your PC is offline, you might still need commercial version which has ability to store notebooks locally in your PC.

OneNote app is a part of the Microsoft Office suite. But it is also available for free as a standalone app and you can download OneNote from its official website. You can get the OneNote app for Windows 10/11, Mac, iOS, and Android devices. It also offers a web-based version and it is also a part of OneDrive and Office on the web. Except for the web version, you can use OneNote offline and sync the work later.

Recently appeared WineHQ 6.0, with it you may try the Office365 offline installer too.

I could install Office365 offline suite using Codeweavers Crossover, it was possible to install, the apps started and seemed to work, but did not test the functions thoroughly.

If all else fails, you can try Crossover for -I think- 2 weeks for free, and see if it works for you better than WINE?

One thing of particular importance to OP (and to me) was offline functionality. Within Joplin, in Tools -> Options -> Synchronisation you can change the Synchronisation Target to be on your local machine. I then backup that folder separately to BackBlaze so no CIA / KGB involved.

I have recently started using Typora and Dropbox for note taking. Typora is a Markdown editor, but has very good WYSIWYG capability. You get both the speed of writing in Markdown and the ease of looking at nicely presented formatting. Of course, you can switch to source code mode if you want. With Dropbox, you get local copies of your files available offline, but you also get cloud syncing so you can work across devices. Typora lets you name your files, shows them to you in a file tree, and of course since it's just Markdown you can take them with you if you ever decide to do something else with them. I wrote more about this on Medium: What if you can't use Evernote?

You can try TagSpaces( ). It is still in heavy development, but it features support for many file types and it is completely offline. For cross device support it can be combined with google drive or dropbox.

Can you create an online portable installer for OneNote 2016 without the .NET Framework included since most Windows 10 already have it install? The user can easily install it manually if need it. Also, most of us will be using in a full desktop Windows instead of WinPE or a portable Windows version that is more difficult to install .NET Framework.

In fact the link is on the page, just not very prominent. On the lower left of the page there is a list of all free OneNote clients like for iOS or Android. Just click on Windows Desktop to download a small installer program that will download and setup the free OneNote 2016 to your PC.

That solution no longer works, cause i've tried it on Android, and it's no longer downloading anything since the latest update. I have about 2800 notes, all in a single notebook. Support recommended to me, to uninstall and reinstall again, but I don't want to risk all my offline notes again. This issue has been going on for almost a year now. I can't understand why they are unable to solve it.

My largest notebook is close to 2.000 notes, it still syncs and holds data for offline use. I am on iOS, so no direct comment about Android. But on Sunday the last Android user following my advise managed to get the download working.

What is good with offline notebooks: Once the initial download was through, it never happened to me again that the updates of changed or new notes would have taken extra time. This runs just in the background while the app is in use.

If you go for example for travelling and have added some notes right before, just check the settings - notebooks - offline page. It shows for all selected notebooks the current status. If it is still working on some, (noticeable by a long green bar with a small grey tip to the right) usually a few minutes are sufficient to let is finish.

By the way: on EN8.13.3 once (and if) set, the offline notebooks were updated in the background in the user given interval. That was the seamless UX of Evernote I loved for years. I could always rely on having all my notes updated offline on mobile. Let's say planning my trip this evening, taking my mobile and tablet the next morning and everything is already there and offline available without having to get in touch to every device, opening EN, check if download is completed... in the year 2022 this feels way to clunky

I also find notebooks with new notes added after the download sync show the progress bar again and no progress... I haven't tested if they are actually downloaded and available offline but assume they are...

How can you tell when ALL the offline notes have updated? I have designated a notebook as "offline" and most of the notes are now available as offline. However, a few are still now available ie: I get an error message when I try to open them. However, I see no indication on my iphone when the entire notebook has been downloaded as offline. Next to the notebook on the Notebooks page there is a little down arrow icon which indicates that the notebook has been designated for offline. I then go to "sync" and force a sync which completes. I then put the iphone on "airplane mode" to check if the notes can be accessed, and they are still not available. This is a problem because I intend to attempt to access those notes when in a foreign country where internet access is spotty or unavailable. Is there a surefire method of forcing each and every note that I want to have to be available offline?

Just from my observation: While a notebook still has open content planned for download, it will show a grey bar in the notebook view in settings, tab offline notebooks. If the notebook already has been downloaded, and just a little is missing, it will show a long green bar, and a nearly not noticeable grey tip. But as long as and grey part is there, the green bar will show as well.

Progressive web apps are like mobile app versions of a website but with more features, such as offline use, the option to pin them to the taskbar, support for push notifications and updates and access to hardware features. You can find Microsoft Office 365 PWAs like Outlook and OneDrive, and they work great on Chromebooks. Here's where to find them and install them so you can still use Office on a Chromebook.

Since the PWA behaves like installed software, you can do things like pin it to the taskbar, get notifications, work offline and easily resize it. The rest of the experience is the same as using the web versions. I actually prefer the PWA versions to the full Office downloads for most things.

Check out the discussion here as well. Some people had the same problem as you and it was solved by using the correct onenote version and PowerShell in admin mode. Unable to find type [Microsoft.Office.InterOp.OneNote.HierarchyScope].  Issue #5  nixsee/ConvertOneNote2MarkDown  GitHub

There is a more complicated way to get a direct download link for the APPX installer of the Microsoft Store application. When you install any application, the Microsoft Store client on your computer receives a direct HTTP/HTTPS link to download the .appx file. You can grab the URL of this direct link using the Fiddler tool, which is used to inspect and debug HTTP traffic.

Copy the appx (appxbundle) app and dependencies files to another Windows 10 (Windows Server 2016/2019) computer and install offline bypassing the Windows Store with a simple double click on the appx file.

Its multi-user capability allows offline paragraph-level editing with later synchronization and merging. This allows collaboration among multiple individuals in a notebook when they are offline. More than one person can work on the same page at the same time using OneNote as a shared whiteboard environment.
