Ongoing Projects
AMBIENT-6G: 01.01.2025 - 31.12.2027
Role: Work-package Leader (WP3: Low-power 6G Network Protocols & Infrastructure)
AMBIENT-6G
AMBIENT-6G focuses on developing ENDs that achieve long-term autonomous operation by harvesting ambient energy, eliminating reliance on primary batteries. It also investigates adaptations in 6G network infrastructure to efficiently integrate these devices into future wireless ecosystems.
ECO-LITE: 01.09.2024 - 31.08.2028
Role: Principal Investigator
ECO-LITE
ECO-LITE develops context-aware protocols for sensing, actuation, computing, and communication in energy-natural devices (ENDs), overcoming current fragmented solutions and pushing performance boundaries. ENDs are maintenance-free, self-sustained/sustainable, cheap, autonomous, and imperceptible IoT devices.
UPRISING
UPRISING introduces and optimizes a cyberphysical system consisting of spatially distributed and flexible energy transmitters, reconfigurable metasurfaces, sensing infrastructures, management systems, and holistic charging protocols, to realize a functional and competitive indoor RF wireless power transfer system.
Hexa-X-II: 01.01.2023 - 30.06.2025
Role: Task Leader (WP5, T5.4: Ultra-low power/cost device and communication designs)
Hexa-X-II represents the full value chain for future connectivity solutions.
Enabled by the outcomes of Hexa-X innovations, the Hexa-X-II consortium will strive to overcome the following societal challenges:
Sustainability: Hexa-X-II will research technologies that contribute to a zero-carbon footprint and limit energy and material consumption.
Inclusion: Hexa-X-II aims to provide connectivity to people in developing countries as well as to the underprivileged members of developed societies.
Trustworthiness: Hexa-X-II will ensure data transparency, security and privacy, and network robustness.

Energy Efficient IoT Deployment for Systems of the Future (ee-IoT): 01.09.2018 - 31.08.2021
ICT2023 - Academy of Finland (UOULU & LUT Consortium)
The IoT is changing key aspects of our daily lives and the way several industries work, due to ubiquitous wireless connectivity, especially due to machine-type communications (MTC) with heterogeneous needs (massive connectivity, low latency, ultra-reliability) of different applications. However, those cannot be met by current technologies or by conventional broadband techniques; both are not often designed to be energy efficient. ee-IoT tackles this issue by proposing an energy-efficient IoT solution that includes: (i) differential treatment of different applications; (ii) pre-processing in the edge based on the specific application requirements and its traffic; (iii) characterization of distinct traffic regimes; (iv) joint design of the wireless communication system with data aggregation and pre-processing. ee-IoT builds theoretical, algorithmic, and implementation (over two different test networks) bases for designing energy-efficient MTC wireless networks for systems of the future.
