Military Morning Reports help trace John's activities after he was drafted. He was initially sent through Fort Devens, Mass. for processing and then onto basic training. He completed mechanics school in January 1944 in Greensboro, North Carolina and from there, in March 1944, was sent to Gulfport, Mississippi for more training. After training he joined the 12th Air Squadron and was sent to the Philippines.
The 12th Air Squadron was part of the 5295th ASAC (P) which was formed after the liberation of the Philippines from Japan. The unit provided air services and support. On September 6, 1945 he was the Crew Chief aboard "Sure Skin" a C-47A, serial number 42-23860 that was carrying a crew of 4 and 26 passengers from APO #72 (Tacloban Air Strip, Leyte) to APO #75 (Nielson Field, Luzon). The plane was last seen over the San Jacinico Straits. Official reports indicate that the plane "blew up in midair" from an undetermined cause. All were lost. Locals found pieces of the plane and some of the bodies near Tacloban, Leyte. Cpl. Backius' remains were among those found and he was buried in the Manila American Cemetery plot B, Row 5, Grave 141.

Mary eventually moved to New Hartford, NY (near Utica) and remarried in June 1949. She passed away in 1984 and was buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica, NY.
