In an era marked by the dizzying speed of technological innovation and the rapid obsolescence of one shiny new platform after another, Radio is beginning its second century of service as one of the most dependable and widely utilized forms of media in the world.

One of the opportunities of World Radio Day 2024 being made available by UNESCO is to provide your station, network or show with a list of radio outlets around the world available to participate in programming partnerships with their colleagues in other countries. You can schedule interviews/conversations (either live or prerecorded) with your broadcast colleagues worldwide to compare and contrast the history and role of radio in their respective countries on or leading up to February 13. These shows can be simulcast on both stations or simply be one personality interviewing another.

On the occasion of World Radio Day 2024, UNESCO releases 20 audio files of one minute each, which can be broadcast, shared and used free of charge and without copyright restriction. You will be able to include them in your programs or events, and also upload them to your social media platforms. The following audios are in their original language, and you are welcome to do a voice-over for your radio station's broadcasts using the attached transcriptions.

Radio is an important player and an essential part of maintenance and transition to peace. Professional radio addresses both the root causes and triggers of conflict, before they potentially explode into violence. It offers an alternative methodology of conflict prevention by clarifying frustrations, or clashes of interest, clearing misunderstandings, and identifying issues of distrust. This can help counter hate, the desire for revenge, or the will to take up arms.

Radio is uniquely positioned to bring communities together and foster positive dialogue for change. By listening to its audiences and responding to their needs, radio services provide the diversity of views and voices needed to address the challenges we all face.

The United Nations Audiovisual Library presents UN Radio Classics, an online archive of documentary and dramatic programmes starring Audrey Hepburn, Kirk Douglas and Bing Crosby, among many others. These programmes, available free of charge with digitally remastered sound, offer a unique way of experiencing key historical moments of the United Nations and of the world throughout the second half of the 20th century.

For several years, the voice at the heart of it all was Terry Berry, the original Walmart Radio legend. (Fun fact: This smooth talker remains at Walmart as a Facilitator at Walmart Academy but returned to the radio studio for a few encore shows in 2021, pictured below with DJ Bo and former DJ Antonio.)

Every April 18, radio amateurs worldwide take to the airwaves in celebration of World Amateur Radio Day. It was on this day in 1925 that the International Amateur Radio Union was formed in Paris.

The partners believe Amateur Radio is uniquely positioned to address people-centered, context-specific security challenges by promoting technical knowledge, practical skills, innovative technology, and the deployment of backup systems at the community level that can be called upon in times of emergency. The pandemic, climate change, natural disasters, and armed conflicts on several continents undermine our security and respect no boundaries. Amateur Radio has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to address human security needs. It is a truly global communications medium comprising some three million radio enthusiasts connecting communities and the peoples of the world.

The objective of World Radio Day is to raise public awareness of the importance of radio and to encourage decision makers to use it to provide access to information, and to improve international co-operation among broadcasters.

And it works. It is one of the most popular UN International Days. Every year, hundreds of radio stations around the world join in the event. The official website for the Day receives an average of over 100,000 hits a year. After gender equality (2014), youth (2015) and sport (2018), the theme chosen for World Radio Day 2020 is diversity.

In November, delegations from countries across the globe will meet in Dubai for the World Radio Conference 2023 (WRC-23). The conference allows delegations to propose changes to international radio regulations and plays a major role in the development and deployment of new radio equipment and standards. With a wide range of issues on the agenda, it will be critical for the U.S. delegation to find consensus on contentious issues and promote the interests of both commercial and government radio operations in the United States.

The conference will also set the agenda for the next World Radio Conference in 2027. As the conference occurs only every four years, participants must carefully consider the future of radio operations and the regulations that will allow for innovation and growth in the sector. As mobile wireless 6G networks, low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations, and next-generation unlicensed standards all will see major developments in the coming years and require additional allocations and regulations to facilitate their deployment, developing a comprehensive agenda can make or break future innovation and determine which countries will lead.

The World Radio Conference is a quadrennial meeting of radio regulators, industry representatives, and academics to determine international radio regulation standards. While countries need not necessarily follow the exact international radio regulations within their borders, these international rules allow for widespread harmonization of regulations and prevent countries from allowing services that would interfere with international allocations.

These issues, while seemingly a bit premature, are at the core of future spectrum discussions. Without a robust pipeline for 5G and 6G networks, the United States could fall behind international rivals including China in mobile deployment and standard setting. At the same time, there are valuable use cases for unlicensed or shared models in which parties maximize the efficiency of any given assignment. Exploring opportunities to make additional bandwidth available while ensuring regulators have the flexibility to design band plans suitable for the particular band will be critical for future radio operations.

13 February is a date proclaimed by UNESCO to celebrate radio broadcast, improve international cooperation among radio broadcasters and encourage decision-makers to create and provide access to information through radio, including community radios.
