Haven't talked recently? Reach out just to chat

It can be really awkward to reach out to someone out of the blue to ask them to vote. Just because you're Facebook friends with someone or used to be close in the past doesn't mean you currently have a relationship with them. Contacting them to make an ask may not feel respectful to the connection you have.

In order to organize people, you may need to first reestablish these relationships. Reach out to contacts in this category with your genuine interest in catching up, connecting, and enjoying their company. In the course of this first conversation, you may find that politics comes up, but there's no need to push it. You have their number; you can talk to them again.

A key step in building a world where everyone thrives is creating a network of trust and mutual care. These networks are one of the first things attacked as a country descends into political violence. People become isolated and afraid to help each other, whether that means talking over options with someone who has an unintended pregnancy or providing humanitarian aid to migrants crossing the border. The simple act of connecting to other people and building caring relationships is itself one step to the left.

There's no need to stop there, though! Once you've talked to them, you should have enough information to use the tools in the other categories.
