How to add the ASAv appliance an GNS3 and enable telnet access
After you will download the file it should look like this:
If you do not have one of the file that is listed there, then just click Create a new version, like I did. After that give it a name and click finish
After that go to the Security Devices and select the Cisco ASAv appliance and just drag and drop.
After that just select next until you are at the add appliance windows:
I, personally, use Linux Mint, so for me it works only with 1 Gig of RAM. If you are using GNS3 on windows you have to use Vmware Player or Virtualbox and it is possible that you will need 2 Gig of RAM.
At the Console type there is for now the vnc option but we are going to change that. After that just add the appliance to your workspace and power it on.
After you will power it on you will see that the terminal will open with vnc, because right now it does not support another type of console. For that we are going to make some changes.
The problem with the vnc console type is that you cannot copy and paste and also you cannot scroll up or down. And if you are going to use telnet as the console type it will not open, it will only show you an error and that's it, nothing more.
To change this, you will have to go to the Security devices and and right click on the appliance and select Configure Template, after that, on the Advance settings tab, you will have to unchecked the option Use as a linked base VM. This will keep any change that you will make in the workplace also to the appliance in the Security devices.
After that just power it on and wait until it loads.
After that go to the global configuration mode and type the following commands:
After that just reboot the device.
At the next start up you will have to see something like this:
Lina to use serial port /dev/ttyS0 for console IO
After that you can stop the device, delete it and go to the Security device tab, right click on the appliance, go to the Advance settings tab and now check back the option Use as a linked base VM. This will keep the appliance to be unchanged every time you will drag one on the desktop.
Now go to the General settings tab, from there on the Console type select the telnet option.
And that's it. Now just drag and drop the device every time you want to practice something and you will have copy, paste and the scroll option.
After you will power on the device it should look something like this.
Now have fun on your practice.
