Sigiriya, a historical site in Sri Lanka, has evidence of human habitation dating back to the Mesolithic period around 3000 BC. By the 3rd century BC, Buddhist monks settled in the area, using rock shelters and caves for residence. King Kashyapa I (477–495 AD), after seizing the throne through a coup, moved the capital to Sigiriya, transforming it into a fortress and royal city. He built elaborate palaces, defensive structures, and gardens atop the rock. His reign ended when his half-brother Moggallana returned from India, defeated him in battle, and Kashyapa committed suicide.

After Kashyapa's death, Sigiriya became a Buddhist monastery, a role it maintained until the 13th or 14th century. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it briefly served as a military outpost for the Kingdom of Kandy. According to some accounts, King Dhatusena, Kashyapa's father, sought advice from a Persian Nestorian priest on building the Sigiriya palace, though this story is not widely accepted. Sigiriya’s historical significance remains evident in its rock inscriptions, ruins, and the legends surrounding its rise and fall.

Kandy is a major city in Sri Lanka's Central Province and was the last capital of the Sinhalese monarchy from 1469 to 1818. Located in the Kandy plateau, it is surrounded by hills and known for its tea plantations. Kandy is both an administrative and religious center, home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of the most sacred sites in Buddhism. In 1988, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Throughout history, Kandy resisted colonization by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. It was known by names like Senkadagala and Maha Nuwara (Great City). The English name "Kandy" comes from a phrase meaning "land on the mountain," adapted by the Portuguese as "Candea."

The Kingdom of Kandy began under Sena Sammatha Wickramabahu and became the capital in 1592. Significant figures include Dona Catherina and Vimaladharmasuriya I, who safeguarded the sacred tooth relic.

Both the Dutch and British launched invasions. The British captured Kandy in 1815 during the Second Kandyan War, ending over 2,500 years of Sinhalese monarchy. The Kandyan Convention formalized British control, and the last king, Sri Vikrama Rajasinha, was exiled to India.

Udawala weNational Park

Udawalawe National Park, located on the boundary between Sri Lanka’s wet and dry zones, is a striking example of ecological diversity and natural beauty. The park’s landscapes are primarily dominated by vast plains but also feature some rugged mountainous areas, such as the Kalthota Range and Diyawini Falls in the north. Additionally, rocky outcrops like Bambaragala and Reminikotha add to its unique geography. The park experiences an average annual rainfall of around 1,500 mm, mostly concentrated during two rainy seasons from October to January and March to May. With temperatures averaging 27–28 °C and humidity levels ranging from 70% to 83%, Udawalawe enjoys a warm and tropical climate throughout the year.

The soil types in the park further highlight its environmental variety. Well-drained reddish-brown soils dominate, while poorly drained grey soils are found in valleys, and alluvial soils line the waterways. The park's diverse ecosystems include marshes, forests, grasslands, and the Walawe River along with its tributaries. The Udawalawe Reservoir, formed after the construction of the Udawalawe Dam, contains remnants of the park’s past forest cover, with dead trees standing as stark reminders of the changes caused by human intervention. Algae species such as Pediastrum, Scenedesmus, and Microsystis thrive in the reservoir, adding to its aquatic biodiversity.

Udawalawe is a sanctuary for an extraordinary range of wildlife. The park is home to 94 species of plants, 21 species of fish, 12 amphibians, 33 reptiles, 184 species of birds (including 33 migratory ones), and 43 species of mammals. Additionally, it houses 135 species of butterflies, making it a haven for invertebrates as well. A teak plantation located south of the dam, planted before the park’s establishment, further reflects the interaction between natural habitats and human activities in this region.
