On December 1, 1996, a legacy of excellence began at the University of Illinois Chicago with the chartering of the Omicron Beta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. As the first and only Black Greek-letter sorority to be chartered on UIC’s campus, Omicron Beta is a symbol of Black excellence, empowerment, and sisterhood.
Omicron Beta was established during a time when representation, service, and solidarity were urgently needed on campus. Eight visionary women saw the need for a sisterhood rooted in community upliftment, academic achievement, and leadership, and they answered that call with boldness, passion, and purpose. These trailblazers laid the foundation for what would become a thriving chapter dedicated to carrying out the mission of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
Since its founding, Omicron Beta has been unwavering in its commitment to meaningful service, impactful programming, and fostering the personal and professional development of its members. With the strong support of our advising graduate chapter, Eta Xi Sigma, Omicron Beta has continued to grow and thrive, making a lasting impact both on and off campus.
We honor the legacy and light of our eight charter members, whose courage, unity, and belief in something greater inspired them to bring Sigma Gamma Rho to UIC. These women are forever honored as the original architects of our legacy.
We proudly recognize:
Sigma Nicolette Stanton, Sigma Shericka Pringle-Jackson, Sigma Anietra LaBlanche-O’Neal, Sigma Takeisha Valentine Strong, Sigma Kimberly Taylor-Hill, Sigma Renee Richardson Davis, Sigma Chantel Causey, and Sigma Rhonda Stone.
These Eight Great Women not only made history, they built a sisterhood rooted in purpose, unity, and excellence that continues to thrive today. Their legacy lives on through every member who enters the chapter, committed to continuing the work they began and elevating the name of Omicron Beta with every step. Today, Omicron Beta remains committed to being a light in the community, grounded in sisterhood, driven by scholarship, and focused on service.
