Operations Management for Sustainable Development
Minor program for TiSEM BSc students
This minor imparts essential skills and techniques in operations management (OM), emphasizing their practical application to real-world challenges associated with sustainable development. Through real-life examples, students learn the use of operations management and operations research tools (e.g., inventory management, resource allocation, linear optimization) in reaching sustainable development goals (e.g., zero hunger, no poverty, sustainable production and consumption, good health and well-being).
Courses
OM Foundations for Sustainable Development
(6 ECTS)
This course provides students with an understanding of a commercial supply chain and discusses the differences between developed and developing contexts, as well as the perspectives of different stakeholders (e.g., policymakers, consumers, businesses).
OM Complexities for Sustainable Development
(6 ECTS)
In collaboration with the Zero Hunger Lab, in this course we discuss challenges in managing supply chains with a humanitarian goal. Students will learn tools applicable in complex real-life situations related to access to food, water, and medicines in developing countries.
Sustainable Development Project
(3 ECTS)
Throughout the block, students will work in groups to apply their learnings on a case study of choice (among a few options). This project requires critical thinking and data analysis, as well as finding creative solutions to a problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can take the minor?
This minor is open to all BSc students in TiSEM in their third year (during the mobility period).
Are there any prerequisites?
No. Third-year students from any bachelor's program in TiSEM can enroll in the minor.
Can I take only one course as an elective?
You can take one of the "OM foundations" or "OM complexities" courses as a standalone elective. You need to enroll in the full minor program to participate in "Sustainable Development Project".
When will the minor take place?
The minor is scheduled to start in the Fall semester of 2024-2025, Block 2 (November-December).
