I created a research poster titled "Sequence-to-Sequence for English to Yoruba Machine Translation" for presentation at the College of Science Research Day (COSRED).
During my Master’s project, I worked independently on the research and development of a transformer-based model for English to Yoruba machine translation. I took initiative in planning and carrying out the project tasks, including conducting a comprehensive literature review, designing the research approach, and contributing to the development and testing of the model. Although I was not part of a formal team and handled much of the work independently, I collaborated closely with my project supervisor and co-supervisors, who provided valuable guidance, feedback, and technical direction throughout the process. Additionally, I engaged the assistance of a programmer to support certain technical aspects of the development, while I maintained responsibility for overseeing the project’s progress, ensuring the integration of all components, and aligning the work with the project objectives. I also sought insights from lecturers and peers to enrich my understanding and improve the quality of the work. The outcome of the project was highly successful and rewarding. I developed a functional machine translation model that contributes to the field of natural language processing, with a particular focus on advancing indigenous language technology. Furthermore, I published a research paper based on this project, which is now proudly included in my professional portfolio. I successfully defended the project during my external defense, which was a proud and fulfilling moment for me. This experience significantly strengthened my technical capabilities, deepened my research skills, and enhanced my ability to manage complex tasks independently while effectively utilizing expert guidance and collaboration.
