A mushroom is the reproductive structure produced by some fungi. It is somewhat like the fruit of a plant, except that the "seeds" it produces are in fact millions of microscopic spores that form in the gills or pores underneath the mushroom's cap. Recently, some of researcher study about the mushroom and prostate cancer. According to BBC, certain varieties of mushrooms have been shown to have potential in protecting against cancer by protecting our cells against DNA damage but also inhibiting tumour formation. There is also some evidence that they may be beneficial in the treatment and management of neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s.
Based on The Economic Times, 3.3 per cent of participants developed prostate cancer. Compared with mushroom consumption of less than once per week, consumption once or twice a week was associated with an 8 per cent lower risk of prostate cancer and consumption three or more times per week was associated with a 17 per cent lower risk. That means, the participants who are eating mushroom once or twice a week, the development of prostate cancer is lower. That also can prevent the prostate cancer from us.
However, since the information on mushroom species was not collected, it is difficult for us to know which specific mushroom contributed to protecting people from prostate cancer. Also, the mechanism of the beneficial effects of mushrooms on prostate cancer remains uncertain until now. The further research about mushroom can prevent people from prostate cancer still in progress. But, if the mushroom is benefit to our health, why not we eat mushroom at least once or twice a week? It is very good for our health.
