10. What factors encourage firms to grow an international user base as quickly as possible? Why is this a risk, and what is the so-called international paradox? What sort of firms are at more risk than others?
The factors that encourage firms to grow an international user base are diversification, taking advantage of cheaper production costs in foreign markets and increasing market share by entering new markets. The international paradox of capital flows is the paradox that more capital doesn't flow from rich to poor countries and this can be a risk because the most vulnerable regions, countries and people are the first victims of global policy.
11. List the pros, cons, and unknowns if Facebook were to seek a way for the Chinese government to allow its expansion into China. What are the risks if the firm remains out of the country? What do you think the firm should do?
Pros include increased access to potential customers and the ability to tap into a new market. Cons include the chinese government restricting access to western social media on the grounds of maintaining the security and stability of the country. This is also linked to internet control policies and surveillance carried out by the Chinese government on domestic internet users. The unknown is not knowing what the Chinese government will say or how they will respond to the idea of expansion in their country from another country. The risks if the firm remains out of the country would be financial, political and regulatory risks. I think the firm should try to seek a way for the government to allow expansion because I feel like there is more pros than cons and unknowns.
